Former President Jimmy Carter, 100, will not attend Donald Trump’s inauguration in January.

The decision is not a political one, but rather has its roots in Carter’s health: He has been in hospice care since February 2023. “President Carter has been in hospice care for almost two years. As you can imagine, he no longer appears in public,” a spokesperson for the Carter Center said New York Post. The ceremony, which takes place outside in cold temperatures, is too much for Carter. The spokesman confirmed this USA today that he would participate if he were healthier.

Carter and his wife, former first lady Rosalynn Carter, attended Trump’s inauguration in 2017.

When Carter entered hospice care, the Carter Center said, “After a series of brief hospital stays, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter decided today to spend his remaining time at home with his family and to receive hospice care in lieu of additional medical procedures.”

They didn’t say the reason for his hospitalization, but his grandson Jason Carter later said Terms and Conditions that the family thought they only had a few days left with him when he entered hospice. “Obviously we’re not in charge, and God had other plans,” Jason said in September 2024. “It’s given us a chance to reflect a tremendous amount with each other and with him.” He adds, “The whole world has had this opportunity, really thinking about him and my grandmother and their legacy. It was a remarkable expression of love and respect, but also admiration for what he actually accomplished, both in the White House and afterward.”

Carter is the country’s longest-living president; He turned 100 on October 1, 2024.
