The Miami Dolphins' Tua Tagovailoa and Jaylen Waddle are inactive against the Browns

CLEVELAND – The Miami Dolphins face the Cleveland Browns in another elimination game this afternoon at 4:05, but are expected to be without quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

Tagovailoa was unexpectedly downgraded from questionable on Friday to doubtful on Saturday due to a hip injury. Up until that point, both Tagovailoa and the coaches downplayed the severity of the injury, which is why it was so surprising.

2:35 p.m.: TUA TAGOVAILOA, JAYLEN WADDLE ARE OUT

Tua Tagovailoa is out today. He is inactive.

WR Jaylen Waddle is also inactive due to a knee injury.

Update 2:15 p.m.: No sign of Tua Tagovailoa as other QBs warm up

Quarterbacks are on the field warming up under the direction of QB coach Darrell Bevell.

But only Tyler “Snoop” Huntley and Skylar Thompson are out there. Thompson was called up from the practice squad to back up Huntley.

How did we get to this point with Tua Tagovailoa’s hip injury?

Tagovailoa was listed as limited in practice on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

When asked about the hip on Thursday, he said the following:

“I mean, it’s good. It’s just like everyone else on the team and everyone else in the league. You get a little confused toward the end of the year, so you just have to deal with it.”

What did coaches say about Tagovailoa’s hip?

Offensive coordinator Frank Smith, Thursday: “December football. Everyone works on the things needed for the game. If you feel completely healthy in December, you probably haven’t played much.”

Coach Mike McDaniel (last week): “In December football there are a lot of these things where players get bumps across the board and you have to be able to deal with those things. He certainly didn’t pose a problem for this week’s preparation.”

Who will start as QB for the Miami Dolphins? Tyler “Snoop” Huntley?

Quarterback Tyler “Snoop” Huntley will be the man on the hot seat for the Dolphins today.

Huntley was actually with the Browns before being released on August 29, although he never appeared in a game for Cleveland.

Huntley has played in three games for the Dolphins this season. Here’s how he and the team performed in these games (all starts):

September 30th: Dolphins lose to Titans 31-12. Huntley is 14 of 22 (63.6 percent) for 96 yards, with no touchdowns and no INTs.

Oct. 6: The Dolphins defeated the Patriots in New England 15-10. Huntley is 18 of 31 for 194 yards (58.1 percent), no TDs and 1 INT.

Oct. 20: The Dolphins lose 16-10 in Indianapolis. Huntley is 7 of 13 (53.8 percent) for 87 yards, 1 TD and no INTs.

Totals for 2024: He is 39 of 66 (59.1 percent) for 377 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT, for a passer rating of 73.9. He also ran 16 times for 67 yards (4.2 average), one touchdown and six first downs.

Is this a day for throwing, with or without Tua?

It was cloudy, humid/rainy all day in Cleveland. At least it’s not cold.

The Weather Channel estimates it will be 58 degrees when the game begins and there is a 66 percent chance of rain.

But a bigger factor is the wind. Tagovailoa even admitted this week that the wind can be a quarterback’s biggest enemy.

The wind is significant today. There will be a steady breeze at 17 mph with gusts of up to 19 mph. Remember that the stadium here is right on the lake.

Will WR Jaylen Waddle play against the Cleveland Browns?

Receiver Jaylen Waddle is questionable with a knee injury after missing the San Francisco game.

NFL Network reported that he is unlikely to play today. But considering Tagovailoa likely won’t play and taking the weather into account, chances are the Dolphins will rely heavily on the running game and De’Von Achane anyway.

It will be a shock if Huntley comes out and hurls the ball.

But as we saw this weekend, we’ve been shocked before.

Expect to see Tyreek Hill dealing with a wrist issue.

How can the Dolphins make the playoffs now?

The Dolphins (7-8) got some help on Saturday when the Bengals beat the Broncos in overtime. And even more help on Sunday when the Colts lost to the Giants.

What needs to happen in the future:

* Dolphins must beat Browns today.

* Dolphins must beat Jets next weekend.

* Broncos face loss to the Chiefs next weekend.

The Athletic model gives the Dolphins a 16 percent chance of making the playoffs.
