The Calgary Flames left the holiday break the same way they started it: with a multi-goal victory. They won’t have time to rest on their laurels, however, as they’re right back in action on Sunday against a dangerous Vegas Golden Knights team that has been dominant on home soil.

My Flames vs. Golden Knights predictions show one of Calgary’s best young players making his presence known in a high-scoring game.

Let’s take a closer look at my NHL picks for Sunday, December 29th.

My Flames picks
Matthew Coronato Over 0.5 points (+120 at BET99)

My Flames analysis

Matthew Coronato is in good form offensively. He has six points in his last five games and has been on the scoresheet in all but Saturday’s win over San Jose.

He runs on a line with Mikael Backlund and Blake Coleman at 5v5. This trio worked well together and controlled the flow of play against their opponents on most evenings. With this line on the ice, the Calgary Flames generated 72 shot attempts every 60 minutes and conceded 57 goals.

They spend a lot of time in the offensive zone and generate more shots and chances than they give up. That’s generally a good recipe for getting results, and that’s what we’re seeing. In their 170 minutes combined, this team scored twice as many goals as they conceded.

What I particularly like about Coronato is that he also skates on the top power play unit. Although the Flames tend to balance their power plays better than most other teams, Coronato’s unit tends to get a little more runway each night.

This is important to note because the Vegas Golden Knights are nothing special on the penalty kill, ranking 18th in PK% over their last 10 games. Ilya Samsonov’s shot on goal for Vegas is a nice bonus. He has an SV% of .898% and a GAA of just under 3.00 this season.

The Flames should be able to score their fair share against him, giving Coronato a good chance to get on the scoresheet.

Flames vs. Golden Knights – Match Game (SGP)

Bet99

Matthew Coronato Over 0.5 points

Rasmus Andersson Over 1.5 shots

Over 5.5

Rasmus Andersson is at a shooting range. He has taken multiple shots in eight of his last nine games, attempting about 4.5 per night during that span.

This includes multi-shot performances against high-end teams like the Lightning, Stars, Panthers and Bruins. It’s not like he’s exaggerating his overall results against the worst defensive teams in the league.

Averaging nearly 25 minutes per game, Andersson will accumulate more than enough ice to create a few shots.

Vegas is averaging 3.5 goals per game and has a top-3 scoring record in its last 10 games. The Flames rank in the top 10 in both shots and goals over the same period.

Since both teams are in good attacking form and have substitutes in the starting lineup, there should be a lot of goals.
