CU fans miss the Big 12 championship

DENVER (KDVR) – The University of Colorado Buffaloes were one of the final two teams competing for a spot in the Big 12 Championship. The winner of the BYU-Houston game would determine whether CU of Iowa State would secure its spot in the finals.

A BYU win ended a tiebreaker between CU and Iowa State and sent Iowa State to the Big 12 Championship. Had BYU lost, the tie would have been in the Buffs’ favor.

Heading into this weekend, the Buffs were one of four teams with a 6-2 record in Big 12 matchups, and generally the tiebreakers weren’t in their favor. Additionally, there were five teams with 5-3 records that were technically still in contention to win the championship before this weekend.

The winner of the Big 12 Championship gets an automatic bid to the College Football Playoff, but the losing team is not only sad but still gets to play in a bowl game.

The Buffs did everything they needed to do on their final day of play to put themselves in the championship race, finishing the season with a 52-0 victory over Oklahoma State.

According to ESPN, Shedeur Sanders set another school record on the final day by surpassing the single-season passing mark. According to CU, Travis Hunter finished the year with the school’s single-season record by scoring 14 touchdowns. Hunter remains a Heisman Trophy contender, while Sanders picked up his own piece of hardware on Saturday.

Bowl game matchups will be determined in the coming days, as some depend on the outcome of the conference championships.
