Ohio State in the final CFP rankings? When the playoff series comes out

Ohio State’s loss to Michigan on Saturday puts the Buckeyes in a wait-and-see stance when it comes to the College Football Playoff.

A win and subsequent berth in the Big Ten Championship would have set the Buckeyes up for a first-round bye or a safe home game. Now they are waiting for the rankings.

Seeds 5-8 will host first-round games. Ohio State was No. 2 in the group in the most recent CFP rankings.

Ohio State’s loss to Michigan means the Buckeyes will finish the regular season at 10-2 as they will not play for the Big Ten title. Instead, No. 1 Oregon (11-0) and No. 4 Penn State (11-1) will do it.

No. 5 Notre Dame defeated USC 49-35 to finish the game 11-1 and secure a host spot.

Penn State defeated Maryland 44-7. Both teams will advance with Ohio State’s loss. The Nittany Lions could clinch a top-four spot by beating Oregon in the Big Ten title game.

Final CFP rankings date

The next CFP rankings will be released on Tuesday on ESPN.

The sixth and final reveal will take place on December 8th.

Oregon, Ohio State, Texas, Penn State and Notre Dame made up the top five of the CFP Top 25 from Tuesday’s CFP rankings. The Ducks and Buckeyes have been the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the CFP rankings, respectively, in the last four rankings releases.

If these predictions are correct, the Buckeyes would play Tennessee on the road in the first round. On ESPN, Tennessee plays Ohio State in the first round.

Here are updates from Saturday’s games:

TEXAS HOLDS A&M: The Longhorns built a 17-0 lead in the first half before cruising to a 17-7 win in College Station. Texas A&M’s only points came on a pick-six, and two stops on fourth down helped Texas stave off the upset and reach the SEC Championship Game in the conference’s first year.

ARIZONA STATE IN BIG 12 TITLE GAME: ASU beat rival Arizona to clinch the No. 1 seed in next week’s Big 12 championship game at AT&T Stadium. Arizona State will face either Iowa State or Colorado for a possible CFP berth. Iowa State advances with a BYU win on Saturday. Colorado advances with a BYU loss.

NOTRE DAME BEATS USC: One team that doesn’t have to worry about making the CFP is Notre Dame, which is all but assured of making the playoffs with its 49-35 win over rival USC. The Fighting Irish obviously won’t be able to get higher than the fifth seed because their independent status means they can’t become conference champions.

Either way, Marcus Freeman and Co. can confidently expect to host a home game in the first round of the playoffs.

ALABAMA WINS IRON BOWL: The Crimson Tide are not in control of their destiny to make the playoffs, but Kalen DeBoer and Co. got a big help Saturday with several notable losses, including to ACC teams Miami and Clemson. Alabama also pulled it off with a 28-14 win in a heated Iron Bowl to keep its hopes of a playoff spot alive.

Ohio State’s loss to Michigan won’t have much of an impact on whether Alabama can sneak onto the field, but at this point the Crimson Tide should be hoping for chaos during conference championship weekend.

SYRACUSE WINS MIAMI: Another twist in the upcoming CFP Top 25 is coming, again from the ACC. Kyle McCord led Syracuse to a 42-38 upset of No. 6 Miami and knocked the Hurricanes out of the ACC Championship game. Whether the Hurricanes stay in the top 12, but it opens the door for Clemson to make it to the CFP as conference champions — if it can beat SMU in Charlotte, North Carolina, in the ACC title game.

Will ACC be a one-bid league? The conference championship weekend should provide some insight.

SOUTH CAROLINA BEATS CLEMSON: As one of the first two teams to compete Saturday, Clemson couldn’t help itself by losing its final to No. 14 South Carolina. However, the Gamecocks’ victory over the Tigers is intriguing when it comes to the impact it could have on the CFP’s top 25 and 12-team bracket, as South Carolina has now won six straight.

The Gamecocks entered Tuesday’s CFP Top 25 at No. 15, four spots ahead of the group, while ASU moved up to No. 12 as the Big 12’s current top seed. With a ranked win over Clemson, Shane Beamers’ squad could see a rise in the CFP rankings on Tuesday. However, a meaningful promotion to the 12-team bracket is unlikely for the Gamecocks as they will not play in the SEC Championship Game next Saturday. All in all, South Carolina is likely to earn a first-team out spot on Tuesday.

OHIO STATE’S LOSS: When No. 2 Ohio State was overwhelmed by Michigan, the top of the CFP class suffered an unexpected blow. After two losses this season, the Buckeyes have been eliminated from contention for the Big Ten Championship and will have to wait until Selection Sunday on Dec. 8 to confirm their playoff fate. The Buckeyes are still in the head-to-head tiebreaker against Indiana and will remain ahead of Indiana as the No. 10 seed in this prediction.

TENNESSEE SECURES CFP PLACE: Tennessee appeared to be on alert early against Vanderbilt, but the Vols overcame a 14-0 deficit to beat the Commodores 36-23 in Nashville. The win, coupled with Ohio State’s loss, gives UT a chance to host a playoff game at Neyland Stadium.

GEORGIA fends off excitement: Thanks to running back Nate Frazier, Georgia was able to avoid playoff disaster with a 44:42 win in the eighth overtime. Kirby Smart’s team had to overcome a lot of adversity against the Yellow Jackets on Friday, as the Bulldogs came back from two deficits – 17-0 at halftime and 27-13 with five minutes left in the fourth quarter – to force overtime. The Bulldogs will face No. 3 Texas or No. 19 Texas A&M in the SEC Championship Game on Dec. 7 for a chance to secure one of the top four seeds and a first-round bye.
