Mikaela Shiffrin has a stab wound in the stomach, trauma from an accident

Mikaela Shiffrin suffered a stab wound to the abdomen and severe muscle trauma after falling during a giant slalom race in Killington, Vermont, US Ski & Snowboard said Sunday.

Shiffrin was looking for her 100th win after setting the fastest time in her first run on Saturday, but just as she was in sight of the finish line, she caught an edge that sent a ski flying as she fell and crashed into the safety net.

The two-time Olympic champion lay there for several minutes before being taken to a medical clinic.

“After her fall during yesterday’s giant slalom at the Stifel Killington Cup, Mikaela was sledded away and taken by ambulance to Rutland Regional Medical Center for evaluation,” US Ski & Snowboard said. “No ligament damage was found. Bones and internal organs look fine. She has a stab wound to the right side of her abdomen and severe muscle trauma.”

On Saturday, Shiffrin said she “just couldn’t move,” adding that she had a graze wound and “something stabbed me.”

US Ski & Snowboard added that a return date for Shiffrin has not yet been set.

Shiffrin, 29, won the Killington slalom in six of the seven years it was held there.
