A New Orleans priest recently convicted of sex crimes dies in a correctional facility

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – The recently convicted former New Orleans priest who was recently sentenced to life in prison for sex crimes has died.

Lawrence Hecker, 93, was convicted Dec. 18 of aggravated rape, aggravated kidnapping and aggravated crime against nature involving a teenager in the 1970s.

Hecker’s attorney, Bobby Hjortsberg, confirmed his death on Friday, December 27, after being notified by the Elayn Hunt Correctional Center where he was being held.

Hecker had received two life sentences without the possibility of parole: one on the aggravated rape charge and one on the aggravated kidnapping charge. He also received a 15-year sentence on the charge of serious crimes against nature and a 10-year sentence on the theft charge.

Man wanted for suspected rape of teen in Tangipahoa Parish

All charges he pleaded guilty to on December 3rd.

He was reportedly on his way to serve his sentence in Angola State Prison but didn’t make it.

The correctional authority did not provide any further information.
