A plane tow banner calling on John Mara to “fix this dumpster fire” circles MetLife Stadium

History repeats itself on Sunday at MetLife Stadium.

A plane carrying a banner reading “Mr. Mara Enough – Please Fix This Dumpster Fire” was seen circling the stadium before Sunday afternoon’s game against the Saints. It’s a clear message to team owner John Mara, who said earlier this season that he wouldn’t fire head coach Brian Daboll or general manager Joe Schoen.

The team is putting that promise to the test with a seven-game losing streak in which it benched and released quarterback Daniel Jones after an overtime loss to the Panthers and then was sacked by the Buccaneers after Daboll was the No. 2 quarterback Drew Lock had bypassed Tommy DeVito in his favor.

Given the dire situation, it wouldn’t be surprising if Mara took a page from his father’s book. On December 10, 1978, a plane carrying a banner that read “15 Years of Lousy Football” flew over Giants Stadium. . . We had enough” and Mara responded by hiring George Young as the team’s general manager after the season ended. It took a few years for Young to tap Bill Parcells as the team’s head coach, but that tandem helped the Giants to two Super Bowl victories, restoring some luster to the franchise.

January will bring an answer to the question of whether Mara will use the same formula to try to pull the team out of its recent nosedive.
