Aaron Rodgers hits a new Jets low with his retirement against Bills

ORCHARD PARK – The end seems near for Aaron Rodgers and the Jets.

Not just for this incredibly disappointing season, but perhaps forever.

Sunday’s 40-14 loss to the Bills at Highmark Stadium, where Rodgers was sidelined for the three quarters he played before being replaced by reliever Tyrod Taylor, was a low point for the 41-year-old Hall of Famer Quarterback tied to a season full of low points.

Rodgers completed just 12 of 18 passes for 112 yards and threw two interceptions in the loss.

He was sacked four times for 26-yard losses, including one for a safety.

The 112 yards was Rodgers’ lowest output since he was held to 104 yards in a 38-7 loss to the 49ers in 2019.

“It’s like the season just ended,” Rodgers said. “We missed too many games. We missed this game. We moved the ball well and then we just hit a wall. And ‘tis the season, so to speak.”

The Jets moved the ball well early in the game and couldn’t do anything with it.

“The two times we played the Bills this year we moved the ball pretty well and just got hurt,” Rodgers said. “We got more points in the first game (20). But if you look at the first leg, we had a lot of chances to win the game. “Today we moved the ball well on the first two drives (and didn’t score any points) and got away from us halfway through the game.”

Rodgers, who was ejected only once in his career, was replaced by Taylor early in the fourth quarter. Taylor completed 11 of 14 passes for 83 yards and two touchdowns.

“Going out and competing is what you enjoy doing,” Taylor said. “Of course you never want to play at the expense of injury or bankruptcy. But of course, when your number is called, you have to go out and perform. It was nice to go out and film some plays.”

Regarding Rodgers, his closest friend on the team, receiver Davante Adams, said: “For Aaron, much of this season has been plagued by injuries. There were some things he had to go through and obviously he wasn’t able to bring his best product to market.

“It’s unfortunate. I think he’s a contender given the way the season has gone and I can’t imagine him not playing. But it’s not something I talk to him about. You have to let people think about such situations.

“I’m thinking about what my future looks like and I haven’t been playing for 20 years yet. If he were to resign, you can’t blame the guy. He put a lot into it and was one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game. No matter what happens from this moment on, you can’t take that away from him.

“He is 41 years old and it is not easy to play this game at the expected level. I’m proud of him and I let him know that every time we’re together.”

When asked what his future holds, Rodgers said: “I’m going to enjoy the next week and then rest mentally and physically.”
