Adam Schefter and Doug Gottlieb argue over Michael Vick’s report

Adam Schefter immediately received pushback from multiple quarters when he reported that Sacramento State was in discussions about hiring Michael Vick as its next head coach, including from Sports Talk host and University of Wisconsin-Green Bay men’s basketball coach Doug Gottlieb.

The two were embroiled in a social media spat on Monday, with Gottlieb firing the opening salvo when he quoted a post by Schefter on his initial report.

“Jesus Shefty, edit what the agents are telling you… 0.0% chance Sac State has $50 million in zero,” Gottlieb wrote on X.

But the NFL insider hit back at Gottlieb with two posts of his own.

“The SAC-12, which leads the school’s NIL efforts, has already announced that it has met its original goal of raising $50 million in NIL funding to support the school’s case for an invitation to the PAC-12 or Mountain West Conference,” Schefter wrote.

And then Schefter went one step further, beating Gottlieb in his basketball team’s 0-3 start in conference play this college basketball season.

“And Jesus, Doug. A seven-game loss and last place in the Horizon League? Less time on social media and more time in the gym,” Schefter wrote along with a screenshot of the Horizon League leaderboard showing her in last place.

As for Schefter’s report, Sacramento State has pushed it back a bit.

School officials told the Sacramento Bee that the report was premature, but acknowledged they had conversations with Vick and others about interest in the position.

The job posting closes Wednesday, but no one has been selected yet, the outlet also reported.

Sacramento State President Luke Wood also addressed the report in a statement on X.

“Vick and I met through Sac State football and our athletic advancement. As you can imagine, the head football coaching job is an attractive role given the success of our athletic programs. Announcements on several key decisions will follow shortly,” he wrote.

According to The Virginian-Pilot, Vick also interviewed with Norfolk State about the vacancy.
