Despite the efforts of Matt Short (52 from 29), D’arcy Short (41 from 22) and Ollie Pope (39 from 27), the Strikers could only record 6-203 in response to Hobart’s 5-214.

Matt Short steered the Strikers towards a monster score from the Hurricanes, but at 52 the Strikers captain fired one high into the air.

Somehow he persevered! Ellis’ Screamer | 01:18

Ellis didn’t seem comfortable with it and seemed to have misjudged it. He had to reach back to where he originally caught it before it wobbled upon contact with the ground.

Just when it looked like the ball would fall to the turf, Ellis caught it again.

“I’m not sure how he understood that,” Mike Hussey said on Fox Cricket.

It turned the game in the Hurricanes’ favor as the Strikers couldn’t score quickly enough to reach the mammoth total after Short was sent off. Had Short stayed in, the outcome probably would have been different.

Earlier, Ben McDermott’s 68 led the Hurricanes to 5-214, with Shai Hope and Tim David scoring 37 and 33 points, respectively.

Both teams’ results each exceeded the Sixers’ Boxing Day total of 2:198, which had previously been the highest score in the 2024/2025 BBL tournament.

STRIKERS STAR SEES RED

There was late drama just before the final when Strikers all-rounder Jamie Overton shouted at umpire Sharad Patel.

Due to a slow over rate, the Hurricanes had to bring a fielder into the crease for the final over.

They were told it once, but it had to be said again, which infuriated Overton, who twice shouted at Patel: “What are you doing?”

A no ball and subsequent free hit for the Strikers would have been awarded if the Hurricanes had thrown the ball with the man outside the circle.

“He has steam coming out of his ears,” Fox Cricket’s Alyssa Healy said of Overton.

Overton had a great evening with bat and ball, taking two wickets and scoring an unbeaten 30.

Delighted, Ellis

A crucial moment in the game was the dismissal of Matt Short in the 12th over.

After reaching 52 off 29 balls, three boundaries and four sixes, the Strikers captain went for Waqar Salamkheil but sent the ball flying high into the Adelaide sky.

Nathan Ellis ran backwards out of the circle and threw himself backwards to barely catch the ball, but it fell away as it hit the turf.

The Hurricanes captain showed great composure under pressure to regain control of the ball after it hit his chest and, much to his delight, completed a spectacular catch.

The Strikers needed 91 from 50 balls when Short was dismissed but managed 25 runs in the next three overs, including a power surge, with the home side scoring just 18 runs upfield.

POWER STARTS

The Hurricanes had their best start of the season with 1:43 on the power play, despite losing in-form opener Mitch Owen in an eventful first half.

Owen, who had just completed his maiden Big Bash century in a win against the Perth Scorchers, hit two consecutive boundaries and tried to put Matt Short’s fourth ball into the stands, but he only managed to beat Overton to defeat at a long distance.

Faced with an imposing target, Matt and D’Arcy Short completed the chase with a flyer of 0-49 after their first four overs.

D’Arcy made 23 from 13 balls with four boundaries, while Matt made 22 runs from 11 balls with a boundary and two sixes and also scored his 2000th Big Bash run.

The brilliant opening partnership was broken in the seventh over when D’Arcy Short was caught in the deep off the bowling of Billy Stanlake.
