Air Canada flight makes emergency landing and catches fire in Halifax

An Air Canada flight was forced to make an emergency landing at Halifax Stanfield International Airport on Saturday evening due to a landing gear malfunction.

Air Canada Flight 2259, departing from St. John’s International Airport, experienced landing problems at 9:30 AST (01:30 GMT Sunday), resulting in a spin and an engine fire, prompting a rapid response from the Emergency crews led to ensure the safety of everyone on board, multiple media outlets reported.

Passenger Nikki Valentine told CBC News that one of the plane’s tires did not deploy properly upon landing.

“The plane started to sit at about a 20 degree angle to the left and when that happened we heard a pretty loud noise that almost sounded like a crash as the wing of the plane started to slide across the pavement with that “What I suspect was the engine,” she said.

After landing, the people on board were evacuated and then taken to a hangar where they were examined by paramedics. No casualties were reported.

As a precautionary measure, flights at Halifax Airport were temporarily suspended following the incident, while a runway was reopened in the early hours of Sunday.
