Alabama transfers QB Dylan Lonergan to visit Georgia

Alabama Transfer quarterback Dylan Lonergan is scheduled to visit Georgia This week, On3’s Pete Nakos confirms. ESPN’s Max Olson was the first to report it.

Lonergan has been a backup for the Crimson Tide the past two years. As a redshirt freshman, he threw eight passes over that span of 35 yards in the game, but was a highly touted recruit out of high school.

Lonergan, a Georgia native, was rated as a four-star recruit in the 2023 class. He was the No. 13 quarterback and No. 162 overall player in the country in his class, according to On3 Industry rankings, a proprietary algorithm that compiles ratings and rankings from all four major recruiting media services.

Lonergan originally chose Alabama over offers from Stanford, South CarolinaGeorgia and North Carolinaamong other things.

The Georgia native attended Brookwood High School before arriving on the Alabama campus. As a junior in high school, he rushed for 3,932 yards and 39 touchdowns. Lonergan was selected to the Under Armor All-America game after his senior year.

News of Lonergan’s entry into the portal came just days after Alabama was eliminated from the 2024 College Football Playoff. The three-loss Crimson Tide were close to being included but were left out and two-loss ACC runner-up SMU was selected overall instead.

The portal was officially opened on Monday, December 9, 2024. More than 2,800 FBS scholarship players entered their names in the NCAA transfer database during the 2023-24 school year. If you exclude those who retired or turned professional, the final total came to 2,707 transfers.

According to On3’s Pete Nakos, that means about 25 percent of all FBS scholarship players hit free agency in a year.
