Alex Ovechkin's 870th goal

Alex OvechkinPlaying in his second game after breaking his fibula, he scored again and continued his great start to the 2024/25 season by scoring his 17th goal in 20 games.

Detroit Red Wings goaltender Alex Lyon (No. 147 on the Ovi goalie list) was the injured party and watched helplessly as Ovechkin fired a one-timer from the left circle at his short side.

The goal was the fourth defeat Lyon suffered against Ovechkin in his career.

The game was made possible by Dylan Strome, who got his stick on a pass from the Red Wings in the neutral zone and forced a loss of possession. Connor McMichael pushed the puck into the offensive zone and found Jakob Chychrun in the middle of the ice. The Capitals’ scoring defenseman immediately pushed the puck to an unguarded Ovechkin, who had found open ice on the left side. The goal was the 870th of Ovechkin’s career.

The Ovi score fell 12:04 into the first half, which briefly cut the Red Wings’ lead to 2-1. The Capitals then lost 4-2 to Detroit.

Ovechkin is now 24 points behind Wayne Gretzky and has a share of the NHL goals record of 894 goals. He has scored seven goals in his last four games, dating back to his hat trick against the Vegas Golden Knights on November 17th.

Against the Red Wings, Ovechkin had eight shots on goal and 14 individual shot attempts in 20:22 minutes of ice time.
