Amazon announces its own range of Nova AI models

Amazon has announced a series of new AI foundation models under the new “Nova” branding that will be available as part of the Amazon Bedrock model library in AWS.

The company is also training a model called Amazon Nova Premier, which it says will be “our most powerful multimodal model for complex reasoning tasks.” Amazon aims to make Nova Premier available in “early 2025.”

Amazon also releases content generation models: Amazon Nova Canvas, an image generation model, and Amazon Nova Reel, a video generation model. The company says these models have “watermarking capabilities” to “promote the responsible use of AI.” As an example of what’s possible with Nova Reel, Amazon shared this mock ad for a fake noodle brand.

Later in 2025, Amazon plans to release a speech-to-speech model and a “native multimodal-to-multimodal” model, according to a blog post.

Amazon announced these new models at its AWS re:Invent conference, currently taking place in Las Vegas. At the show, the company also said it is building a massive AI computing cluster based on its Trainium 2 chips in collaboration with Anthropic (in which it has invested $8 billion). “When completed, it is expected to be the world’s largest AI computing cluster available to Anthropic to date on which to build and deploy its future models,” Amazon said.

The company, like many other major technology companies, is committed to bringing new AI products and features to market to stay ahead of newer companies like OpenAI. Amazon may have an advantage because much of its internet infrastructure is already based on AWS – large companies may be more willing to use Amazon’s AI offerings because the company already has a trustworthy reputation. Today, an Apple executive even appeared on the re:Invent stage to talk about how the company is relying on Amazon’s custom AI chips.
