Amazon misidentifies 49ers’ Trent Williams in embarrassing mistake

Well, Trent Williams certainly looked different on Thursday night.

Amazon and analyst Kirk Herbstreit made a fatal error in the Rams’ win over the 49ers when the broadcaster and announcer incorrectly identified Nesta Jade Silvera as Williams.

“There’s Trent Williams,” Herbstreit said, while the screen instead showed Silvera with a chyron indicating he was Williams, “who is a big part of the strength of this offensive line and they really miss him at the top, not just because of his talent, but just because of his presence and what his presence means to this offensive line and type of personality of this offensive line.”

One of the problems with live broadcasts is the difficulty of switching when things aren’t right, and something clearly went wrong for the “Thursday Night Football” crew during the NFC West matchup.

Amazon had a graphic created for Williams and apparently had planned a segment in which Herbstreit discussed how his absence would impact the team.

The cameraman then just had to find Williams on the sideline, and well, that part of the process didn’t go according to plan.

Instead, the world saw Silvera, a practice squad defensive tackle in his second season.

Herbstreit, either unaware of the mistake or not wanting to bring it to light, plowed through his thoughts with less than five minutes left in the first quarter.

Of course, social media took advantage of the mistake.

“Um, Thursday night football, that black man is NOT Trent Williams. I repeat, the wrong black guy. @49ers,” tweeted NFL analyst Emmanuel Acho.

Former Giants lineman Geoff Schwartz wrote: “Trent Williams looks different. 😂.”

Luckily, judging by the music box, the broadcast found him in a suite about three minutes later.

“Trent Williams, of course they missed him, the left tackle, he missed his fourth game, 10 days before the next game,” Al Michaels said.

Thursday night turned out to be a terrible night for everyone associated with the 49ers.

Not only did San Francisco lose at home and fall to 6-8, potentially fatally damaging its playoff chances, but linebacker De’Vondre Campbell essentially left the team.

Campbell left the field in the third quarter after being told to go into the game.

49ers star George Kittle and other teammates grilled Campbell, with the tight end calling the decision “stupid,” “stupid” and “immature.”
