American Airlines is suspending all US flights on Christmas Eve

Due to a “technical problem,” all US American Airlines (AA) flights had to be suspended this Christmas Eve.

The airline shared the news on X – formerly Twitter – and posted: “We are currently experiencing a technical issue on all American Airlines flights.”

They added that passenger safety was their “top priority” and that once the situation was resolved, they would have people on their way to their destinations. According to NBC News, the ground stop was lifted at 8 a.m. ET.

Ahead of the resolution, an AA spokesperson told CNN that it was working to “resolve the issue as quickly as possible.” They also apologized to customers for the inconvenience caused by the interruption of holiday travel.

Following a recommendation from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the AA requested a grounding of all of its flights. CNN reported that the FAA has referred all inquiries about the incident to the airline.

When asked in the comments section of their X post to provide a timeline for the initial disruption, a spokesperson for the airline said they were “trying to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.”

Another traveler lamented his botched vacation plans, posting: “What about connecting flights? I really don’t want this to ruin our family vacation.”

“Thanks for ruining the family vacation,” another shared.

However, many were grateful to the airline for taking passenger safety so seriously, with one X user writing: “Thank you for putting safety above all else.”

American Airlines did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for an update
