Amon-Ra St. Brown's big day for Lions vs. Bills came when he was sick

Amon-Ra St. Brown had the best game of his life while battling the after-effects of a gastrointestinal infection.

St. Brown, the NFL’s fourth-best receiver, said he barely ate before the Detroit Lions’ game against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday after struggling with diarrhea and vomiting late Saturday night.

The Lions lost 48-42 for the first time in three months, but St. Brown had 14 catches for 193 yards and a touchdown.

“Maybe I felt a little better before the game, but I couldn’t eat,” he said. “I probably ate a banana or two throughout Sunday, so I didn’t eat much. I was just more tired than anything else. I had enough fluids. I gave myself an IV but couldn’t eat. I felt much better throughout Monday.

St. Brown did not speak to reporters after Sunday’s game and revealed why on his podcast this week.

He said he began feeling ill at midday Saturday and lay in bed for several hours that night, unable to sleep. Finally, he stuck his fingers down his throat to vomit for the first time in his life.

“I promise you. For the first time. Yes, no lie,” he said on Wednesday.

St. Brown has a team-leading 95 catches for 1,056 yards in 14 games. He is on pace to top 100 catches and 1,100 yards receptions for the third straight year and needs one more touchdown to tie a career high.

Against the Bills, he caught eight passes in the second half, including a 66-yard touchdown on third-and-17 late in the third quarter to keep the Lions’ comeback hopes alive. He also lost a fumble in the third quarter and had a potential third-down conversion look off his fingertips on the play before Jake Bates missed the field goal.

Lions coach Dan Campbell said he had no idea St. Brown was dealing with an illness before the game.

“Nobody told me, it’s just like Saint,” he said. “He won’t say anything until it’s finished.”

And he said he showed the team a clip on Wednesday of St. Brown and David Montgomery trying to push tight end Sam LaPorta for extra yards on a catch late in the game to show their efforts. Montgomery suffered an MCL injury in the game that would potentially require season-ending surgery.

“It says a lot and you turn on the tape and you don’t notice anything else because he’s one of those guys that can feel like shit and it’s not going to affect how he approaches the game and how much effort he puts in. ” said Campbell. “This is the stuff Saint does over and over again. “Everyone sees the production, the receiving, the route running, the running after the catch, but I don’t know if everyone always sees how much dirty work this guy does for us, and that’s it.” It’s rare that there is one “There’s a receiver who does everything at a high level, or when you’re feeling bad and you’re not – he just leaves because he doesn’t want to let the guys down.”
