Andy Reid breaks his silence on key Chiefs signings

Andy Reid breaks his silence on key Chiefs signings

The Chiefs could be close to reuniting with former Kansas City CB Steven Nelson, and head coach Andy Reid made his first public comments on the potential move on Monday.

Nelson announced his retirement in June but has enjoyed success with the Texans over the last two years. Given the struggles the secondary has had since Jaylen Watson’s injury, it’s likely that Nelson would be an upgrade.

Based on Reid’s comments, a reunion seems more likely than not at this point.

Nelson was originally a third-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft and played four years with the organization before transferring. There was significant controversy surrounding his departure, although the team appears willing to overlook those issues.

After leaving the Chiefs, Nelson played for the Steelers, Eagles and Texans before announcing his retirement. He’s still only 31 years old and started 16 games last season, proving he still has plenty of energy left in the tank.

In 2023, Nelson posted a paltry 73.3 passer rating when targeted in coverage. He recorded 63 tackles, 12 passes deflected and four interceptions, developing a reputation as a ballhawk for one of the league’s surprise teams.

Joshua Williams suffered an injury during the Chargers game, raising questions about his future availability. Trent McDuffie is still a star, but Kansas City has little to no depth behind him. Nazeeh Johnson and Chamarri Conner didn’t play well when given the opportunity, and even Keith Taylor was forced to take snaps late in the contest.

The Chiefs are focused on winning their third straight Super Bowl. This current group in the secondary represents a major weakness that will be exploited by elite passing attacks in the playoffs. Considering how well Josh Allen has played this year and how talented Lamar Jackson is, Kansas City needs improvement.

Nelson could be that emergency signee. We don’t know if he’ll join the team yet, but based on the information we have, it sounds like he’ll be back to try and win a ring.
