Another blast of Arctic air is rushing into the U.S. after a powerful winter storm sweeps across the Northern Plains.

Wind chills reached subzero temperatures in some locations Thursday morning, with low temperatures in the single digits in parts of the Dakotas and the Upper Midwest.

The cold air is moving in behind an Arctic front and is affecting hundreds of millions of people in the eastern part of the country.

High temperatures will be 20 to 30 degrees below average, the FOX Forecast Center said. With wind gusts exceeding 50 miles per hour for millions of people, wind chill levels will be dangerous for some.

While temperatures may feel warm in areas like New York City on Thursday morning, temperatures will continue to drop throughout the day. Lows will fall into the 20s along the Interstate 95 corridor and into the teens in interior portions of the Northeast.

“These cool temperatures extend as far south as possible,” said FOX weather meteorologist Britta Merwin. “So there are a lot of us in company.”

The cold also returns in the Southeast, especially on Friday when maximum temperatures will be 10 to 20 degrees below average.

Record lows are even possible for parts of the Carolinas on Friday morning. Record-breaking or not, low temperatures Friday morning will be in the teens for millions of people as far south as Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi.

“This is a good time of year to check your carbon monoxide monitors in your home and make sure your chimney is cleaned so you can stay warm safely,” advises Merwin.

There will be a warm-up in the eastern United States early next week.
