Here’s a college football story from the AP:

The Army’s goal each year is to reach December and win a trophy by defeating the Navy.

The Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy will indeed be on the line when the Black Knights and Midshipmen meet on December 14th in one of college football’s most famous rivalry games.

But this season, Army can pick up some additional hardware along the way.

The No. 24 Black Knights (10-1, 8-0, No. 24 CFP) can cap off their underwhelming American Athletic Conference debut by capturing the conference title with a win over Tulane (9-3, 7-1 ) win. on Friday evening at their home stadium in West Point, New York.

“There are only 18 teams playing for a championship this week. There will only be nine winners. It’s a blessing to be in this position,” said Army cornerback Jaydan Mayes. “I think everyone would rather be on that end of the spectrum than the other end, waiting to play Navy and watching what could have happened for our team.”

Army went undefeated in its first season in the AAC and is playing for a conference title for the first time. The Black Knights played in Conference USA from 1998 to 2004 and were otherwise independent since their program began in 1890.

Quarterback Bryson Daily was the league’s offensive player of the year and has a chance to break the AAC record for rushing touchdowns in a season heading into the title game. Jeff Monken was named Coach of the Year.

The reward is a matchup with a Tulane team playing in its third straight AAC title game. The Green Wave are coming off a 34-24 home loss to Memphis on Thanksgiving that ended their 17-game winning streak in conference play, their hopes of hosting the championship and perhaps even making the College Football Playoff.

Coach Jon Sumrall didn’t expect the disappointment to last.

“We have a chance to compete in a conference championship. If we don’t focus, then we’re ashamed,” he said, adding that he told his 18-member all-conference team that he didn’t remember individual honors.

“I remember which teams won championships. The championship teams I was a part of are something I will remember forever,” Sumrall said. “For example, I’ll be 75 years old lying around unable to function and I’ll remember the championship teams I was a part of. This is different. It means something. It’s different. So if we don’t focus on this opportunity and take it with joy, we have a problem. We need a heart transplant if we are not ready for it.”

The Green Wave split appearances in the last two AAC championship games, defeating UCF in 2022 before losing to SMU last year, both at home.

Army came around and prevailed in the conference for the first time, losing only to Notre Dame at Yankee Stadium and grabbing the No. 1 seed that had belonged to Tulane the previous two seasons. But perhaps in part because of all their late-season experience — the Green Wave defeated Southern California in the 2023 Cotton Bowl after winning the AAC championship — the visitors are listed as 4 1/2-point favorites by BetMGM.

“This is a game they took part in. They have guys that played in the conference championship game,” Monken said. “This is our first time so it’s a new experience for our boys and it’s exciting, but we have to play very good football if we want to have a chance of winning.”

Strange schedule

With the Navy match still to come, Army will appear in a conference championship game before playing its final regular season game. Both teams defeated Air Force this season, securing the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy for the winner.

Victory at West Point

Tulane ended Army’s 15-game home winning streak with the victory at Michie Stadium on October 5, 2019. This time around, the Black Knights have rattled off eight straight wins at home as they host a Green Wave team that has won 15 of its last 16 road games, with its only loss coming at then-No. 15 Oklahoma in September.

Daily’s dominance

Daily led the AAC with 1,354 rushing yards, including an Army single-season record with nine consecutive games of 100 or more, and his 25 rushing TDs are second nationally behind Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty with 28. Daily still needs one more, to break the AAC mark set by Navy QB Will Worth in 2016.

On the run again

Tulane held a 9-0 lead when outrebounded, but fell to 0-3 when outrebounded after Memphis held a 236-57 lead. The Green Wave will need to turn that record around against an Army team that leads the nation with 312.5 yards per game on the ground.
