Arsenal are all smiles. They were the better team – they should have put the game to bed in the first half – although Monaco made a good attempt in the search for an equalizer in the second half. The win takes the Gunners to third place in the Champions League, with a home game against Dinamo Zagreb and a visit to Girona coming up in the new year.

GOAL! Arsenal – Monaco 3-0 (Havertz 88)

Arsenal take a quick free kick down the left and Trossard crosses wide. Saka hits a shot and a cross from the right corner of the six-yard box. Havertz steps up to the right post. Kehrer sticks out one foot and fakes it into the top right corner. It looks like an own goal, but for now the officials have attributed it to Havertz.

87 mins: It will be very interesting to see how Everton deal with Arsenal’s corners on Saturday, now Adi Hütter has offered his blueprint. You can bet Sean Dyche has been taking notes.

85 minutes: Trossard forces Teze to concede a corner on the left. Monaco leaves three men in the field again. Confused when confronted with a half-empty box, Trossard and Nwaneri try a few quick things, but everything goes wrong.

share

84 mins: This mistake took the wind out of Monaco’s sails. Arsenal were second best for most of the second half and suddenly first in everything. Trossard does a one-two with Havertz to create space on the edge of the Monaco D, but slips as he takes his shot.

82 mins: Monaco makes a triple change. Camara, Vanderson and Embolo are replaced by Teze, Matazo and Ilenikhena.

GOAL! Arsenal 2-0 Monaco (Saka 78)

Majecki rolls the goal kick to Kehrer on his right. Kehrer rolls the ball back to Salisu to the left of the goalkeeper. Salisu taps to the goalkeeper, who is immediately brought down by Havertz. The ball is deflected to Saka, who misses from six meters. The ball whistles into the corner and that should be it for Arsenal.

77 mins: Ødegaard crosses far from the right. Merino heads past the far post. Trossard was in a better position behind him. But no matter, because the resulting goal kick…

share

76 mins: For the first time in this second half, Arsenal enjoy some sustained possession. Have they finally pulled the trigger on Monaco?

share

74 mins: Havertz juggles his way out of a three-man rush. This is a wonderful skill. He sends Trossard into the acres on the left. Ødegaard is free in the middle, but Trossard can only direct the final pass into the nearby Salisu. He gets the ball back and aims towards the top right, but the shot always goes high and far away. A huge opportunity to complete this.

share

73 mins: Jesus is replaced by Havertz.

share

71 mins: Saka advances down the right and rolls infield for Trossard, who attempts to release Ødegaard down the inside left channel. A better weighted ball and Ødegaard is in the goal, but the pass goes over the ball.

share

69 mins: Ødegaard pulls Ben Seghir to the ground, receives a free kick of all kinds and briefly considers whether he should throw the ball away in disgust. He decides against what is best. Arsenal are not in the best mood at the moment.-

share

68 mins: Minamino dribbles into the Arsenal penalty area from the right and is lightly pulled on the shoulder by Kiwior. A chance to cynically drown and leave the referee to make a penalty decision. But Minamino decides to stay on his feet.

share

66 mins: Trossard crosses from the left. Ødegaard hammers a shot from the penalty spot straight at Majecki, who parries… and then the flag goes up.

share

65 minutes: Minamino blocks Saliba’s poor pass from the right-back position. He plays a diagonal pass from left to right to Embolo, who turns 12 yards out and shoots a low drive just inches past the bottom right edge. Monaco is getting closer and closer to equalizing.

share

64 mins: Arsenal make a triple substitution: Rice, Lewis-Skelley and Martinelli make way for Timber, Trossard and Jorginho.

share

63 mins: Henrique dribbles past Partey and Saka on the right, reaches the baseline and cuts back to Minamino, who should do better than hit a weak shot from ten meters straight at Raya. Arsenal tries to counter but Vanderson tugs at Martinelli and receives a yellow card.

share

61 mins: Monaco’s tactic for dealing with Arsenal’s famous corner kick routine, by the way, was to keep three men on the halfway line and force the Gunners to keep up with them… and so there were fewer players and a lot less clutter in the penalty area. Premier League managers across the country will be pulling out their notebooks. Doodling, doodling, doodling.

share

60 minutes: Rice’s far corner is clearly beaten by Majecki. On the edge of the penalty area, Merino thinks he has been fouled by Embolo, but no whistle is blown. Seconds later he leans back and devotes himself to the book.

share

58 mins: Merino twirls into the air and strides through the middle of the park. He plays in Martinelli on the left side. Martinelli drops a shoulder jab to get past Vanderson and crosses low and hard. Salisu cuts a strange…and somewhat lucky…distance over his own bar. Here comes Arsenal’s first corner of the evening!

share

56 mins: More space for Vanderson on the right side. He tries again with the flat cross. This time Embolo is involved, but Kiwior takes the lead and knocks the ball out of play in the first corner of the game. Nothing comes of the standard situation, Akliouche sends it straight into Raya’s hands.

share

54 mins: Monaco started the half better. But then they did that in the first half, and look how that ended. “Wonderful help from Jesus,” writes Charles Antaki. “Who are these chattering critics? Pah!”

share

53 mins: Vanderson storms down the right and sends a dangerous ball through the Arsenal penalty area. But no one else in green was keeping up with the game.

share

51 mins: Minamino attacks from a distance. Not good.

share

49 mins: Rice slaloms out of defense. The referee tries to get out of his way. But whatever path he chooses, Rice follows. The audience may not be happy, but this is silent film perfection. The referee can’t shake Rice off. A slapstick chase scene. Finally, Rice makes a sharp right turn and the skit is over.

share

47 mins: Camara circles the free kick into Arsenal’s penalty area. Kehrer fights for a header from ten meters away and pushes the ball past the right goal. Had he hit the target, Raya would have been defeated and left rooted to the ground. And Kehrer was basically unchallenged, so should were at the destination. Arsenal gets away with one.

share

46 mins: Jesus has the chance to release Martinelli into the Monaco penalty area, but misses the pass. Monaco counterattacks and Kiwior knocks Akliouche down 30 meters from goal. Free kick. The box is loaded.

share

Monaco starts the second half. Soungoutou Magassa, who made some big mistakes in the first half, was replaced by former Liverpool star Takumi Minamino. But Arsenal didn’t replace Gabriel Martinelli, which is something of a surprise as he should have received a second yellow card right at the end of the first half, and he’s certainly drinking in the last chance saloon now.

Halftime entertainment. Max! Barry! David Squires!

HALF-TIME: Arsenal 1-0 Monaco

One half of two halves. Monaco looked safe for the first 20 minutes, but then Arsenal turned on the action. The hosts could easily have scored five goals. They would also have seen Gabriel Martinelli sent off for two yellow cards, so there’s a good chance he won’t come out in the second half.

share

45 minutes: Camara goes to the right and is thrown to the ground from behind by Martinelli, who already has a yellow card. He should go – this is his second yellow card all day – but the referee opts for a quiet word instead. Martinelli is really very lucky.

share

44 mins: Arsenal are playing around in game management style. Monaco is now chasing shadows.

share

42 mins: Make that five. Monaco is suddenly omnipresent, Camara is the last to get possession of the ball. Ødegaard pushes Martinelli free inside on the left. Martinelli then repeats Ødegaard’s miss from a few minutes ago. The flag is raised for offside, but Martinelli was watching. VAR would certainly have taken out the powers that be and overthrown this.

share

40 minutes: Magassa, not for the first time this evening, runs wild on the halfway line. He plays a terrible back pass to Vanderson, allowing Ødegaard to storm away with the ball. He is clear! Ødegaard reaches the edge of the penalty area and looks for the bottom right corner… but the shot always misses. A huge miss, Arsenal’s third big miss of the night. Somewhere in a parallel universe, Arsenal are 4-0 up.
