Gabriel Jesus scored a second-half hat-trick as Arsenal came from behind to beat Crystal Palace 3-2 and progress to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday.

Palace sent Arsenal reeling in the fourth minute when Jean-Philippe Mateta pushed aside Gunners defender Jakub Kiwior to collect a long ball and side-foot a shot into the goal.

But Arsenal thoroughly dominated the second half and Jesus equalized in the 54th minute when Martin Ødegaard sent a beautiful through ball into the box and the Brazil international fired the ball over Dean Henderson.

Jesus scored his second goal in the 73rd minute when Bukayo Saka put the ball through and hammered it into the goal. He completed his hat-trick eight minutes later when he ran onto a ball from Ødegaard behind the Palace defensive line and then shot past Henderson.

Former Arsenal player Eddie Nketiah scored again for Palace just before the end when he jumped high and headed home past David Raya.

In the other quarter-finals, defending champions Liverpool secured their place in the semi-finals with a 2-1 win over Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium thanks to goals from Darwin Núñez and Harvey Elliott.

Nunez, who had been egged on by Saints fans for a wild miss earlier in the game, got on the scoresheet in the 24th minute when he pounced after a misstep by center back Jan Bednarek.

Eight minutes later, Elliott doubled the Reds’ lead when he fired a low, hard shot from a pass from Cody Gakpo. Cameron Archer equalized for the home team in the 59th minute with a shot from the penalty area.

At St James’ Park, Tonali scored in the ninth minute when Nathan Collins’ attempted free throw fell at his feet and he fired a rocket from 20 yards out – his first goal since returning at the end of August after a 10-month suspension for violation the betting rules.

Just before half-time, Tonali volleyed Anthony Gordon’s cross from near the penalty spot for his second goal, and Newcastle tripled their lead when Bruno Guimarães sent a pass across goal for Fabian Schär in the 69th minute Gate shot.

Yoane Wissa scored for Brentford in stoppage time, but the game was already out of reach by that point.

The final semi-final spot is up for grabs on Thursday when Tottenham Hotspur hosts Manchester United.
