As Christmas Eve begins, snow falls across New York and New Jersey

NEW YORK – Just in time for Christmas Eve, it is snowing lightly in New York City and the surrounding area.

The weather warning is in place until the early hours of Tuesday morning. Even if the impacts are minimal and quick, you should pay attention to slippery areas.

Light snow is making its way into New York City, moving northwest to southeast. It will snow for a maximum of two to three hours at any given location, and there will be significant snow off the coast by late morning.

If you time it, you can expect snow showers to occur in the north and west between 8 and 9 a.m. It will move through town at 10am or so and then leave the coast at 11am

The total amount will be small, in most cases the coating is up to 2.5 cm. The higher elevations of Sullivan, Ulster and parts of Orange counties could quickly reach 1 to 3 inches. Mild impact overall, but enough to slow you down this morning.

By midday the sky will begin to clear and some sunshine will return in the afternoon. Temperatures will finally climb above freezing and peak in the mid to upper 30s.

For Santa Claus it will be quiet overnight and the sky will be partly cloudy. Lows will be in the 20s.

Things are looking quiet as far as Christmas Day and the first night of Hanukkah are concerned. Mostly sunny skies with highs in the 30s.

After this morning’s rapid light snowfall, the next chance of precipitation won’t be until late this weekend. And if a milder trend emerges, it will rain.
