Athletic director reacts to death of Medrick Burnett Jr

The HBCU athlete passed away this week after playing in the Magic City Classic last month. Now the Jefferson County coroner’s office says Burnett died Wednesday evening at UAB Hospital. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office said Medrick Burnett Jr. died Wednesday evening at UAB Hospital. Before playing basketball at Alabama A&M, he played for Grambling State. His former athletic director said he was a team player on and off the field. Trayvean Scott, vice president of athletics at Grambling State University, said he recruited Burnett Jr. Burnett Jr. is originally from California. Scott said he was devastated to learn of Burnett Jr.’s death. “I’m trying not to be too emotional, man.” Medrick is a current student-athlete at Alabama A&M, but he’s a lifelong Gram Fam and, man, it’s just really sad. My heart, my thoughts, my prayers, all prayers on behalf of my president, my board and Grambling State University, of course we express our thoughts, our prayers, our well wishes. I remember Medrick, he was one of the last student-athletes we recruited in that 23rd class, and I remember his parents coming down and meeting in the weight room and really seeing him, his spirit and his personality over time “We met last year,” Scott said.
