Australia vs India: Hosts’ seamers impress but rain ruins day three of third Test in Brisbane

The Australian seamers ensured they remained in control of the third Test against India despite rain decimating most of the third day in Brisbane.

The hosts added 40 runs to their 405-7 overnight either side of a rain delay, with Alex Carey the last man to make 70 out.

India’s reply was delayed by more rain before they slipped to 22-3.

Yashasvi Jaiswal hit Mitchell Starc for four on the first ball of the innings but was caught at mid-wicket on the next ball.

Shubman Gill was caught superbly by Mitchell Marsh at the gully before Virat Kohli caught past Josh Hazlewood.

The rain returned as Rishabh Pant walked to the crease and then much of the afternoon and evening session was blighted by further rainfall, a wet outfield and poor light.

There were four phases of cricket – each lasting 11, 23, seven and 17 balls respectively.

Pant was sent off in the third over, dismissing Pat Cummins, before KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma took India to 51-4 at stumps.

While 98 overs can be bowled on each of the remaining days, it may be difficult to get a result if more rain is forecast.

After Australia’s 10-wicket win in Adelaide last week, the five-match series is level at 1-1.

India will need to win at least two of the last three Tests to book a place in the World Test Championship final at Lord’s in June.

Defending champions Australia will reach the final if they win two of the remaining Tests.
