India claims massive victory in first Test against Australia

India scored an impressive 295-run win over Australia in the first Test in Perth, continuing their extraordinary run in the country.

On the fourth day, they defeated Australia by 238 in the final session to take a 1-0 lead in the five-Test series.

This means India have now won five of their last nine Tests in Australia since their 2018-19 tour and lost just two.

West Indies are the only other team to have won a Test in Australia during this period.

Australia were on 12-3 after Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj launched a devastating new-ball attack towards the end of the third day – and that soon became 17-4 when the latter caught Usman Khawaja behind after a high-edge move.

Steve Smith was then superbly set up by Siraj and found himself 17 points behind, which righted itself.

Travis Head (89′) and Mitchell Marsh (47′) countered but both fell in quick succession to Bumrah and Nitish Kumar Reddy respectively in the afternoon session.

Off-spinner Washington Sundar had Mitchell Starc caught at short leg and beat Nathan Lyon before a superb slower ball from Nitish Rana deceived Alex Carey and secured the overall win.

India needs to win three of the next four Tests to book their place in the third consecutive World Test Championship final.

Australia needs five wins in this series and a two-Test tour of Sri Lanka to reach the final.
