Baker Mayfield injury: The Buccaneers QB was substituted by Jadeveon Clowney and goes into the marquee against the Panthers

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield suffered an injury in the third quarter of Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers Jadeveon Clowney stepped on him. The team looked at him in the blue medical tent and Mayfield was clearly limping.

The good news for Buccaneers fans is that Mayfield returned to the game on the next series and took over as backup QB Kyle Trask. However, Mayfield’s first pass attempt was an interception.

Despite the pick, Mayfield is preparing for a strong 2024 season. In 11 games (not including Sunday’s game against the Panthers), Mayfield has completed 71.4 percent of his passes for 2,799 yards, 24 touchdowns and nine interceptions for a passer rating of 104.1. He is coming off a 2023 season in which he led the Bucs to the divisional round of the playoffs and was named to the Pro Bowl for the first time in his career.

Baker Mayfield loves playing in the Buccaneers offense

“This is basically the most balanced offense I’ve ever been a part of,” Mayfield said last month, according to the Buccaneers’ official website. “Obviously you talk about the plan that we put in place and how we implement the run game now and then just the different personnel structures that we had to go into to learn and with the injuries that we suffered, I had to grow. It’s fun to watch. It’s fun to see the different packages we can have and the things we can do… you know, games from games, still your bread and butter – the things you can’t fix, if they are (not broken). ”

Mayfield also talked about having the best completion percentage of his career. “You know, obviously the completion percentage depends on the play call and the scheme, but trust the receivers and then, as I keep telling you, let the defense dictate where the ball has to go,” he said. “Don’t try to force things, don’t try to do too much, move through progressions and then it goes back to check-downs and simple things that are simple throws that these guys turn into explosive plays. “I just trust and trust the guys we have and we have the right group for it.”
