Banging cars “sounded like explosions” | Witnesses report causeway crash

Video of the Causeway crash flooded social media, with people posting pictures and videos of the aftermath on Facebook.

NEW ORLEANS – Video of Tuesday morning’s accident on the Causeway flooded social media, with people posting pictures and videos of the aftermath on Facebook. Witnesses described the sounds they heard as people collided.

Aaron Ordoyne said: “Our first thought was to run and check on people.” Ordoyne was one of many who drove over the causeway on Monday morning. He said: “We had to apply the brakes to avoid hitting the car in front of us. The driver swerved a little to the left, and not within five seconds an 18-wheeler collided with the car next to us.” “

Witness video showed a police car on the embankment being smashed in the accident and a car about to go over the edge. Pictures show cars trapped between other vehicles and barriers. Others show cars held up by trucks.

Gary Cassard says he saw people slamming on their brakes. He said, “Jesus took the wheel…and took me out of harm’s way.”

He said some motorists nearly flew over the side, saying, “At least a quarter mile ahead of me, at about mile marker 11.8, four cars were trapped, all of their noses equally pinched, blocking the entire causeway.”

He says he could hear the carnage unfolding around him: “Three trucks got into each other and blocked the entire path, but behind them many vehicles, probably three to four, crashed into them, making huge noises that were like explosions sounded.” “

More pictures show the traffic jam. The bystander video shows a lifted truck on the edge of the barrier. Other photos show the thick fog.

Ordoyne said: “The maximum was 100 feet, the average was 50 feet.”
