If you’ve ever dreamed of running a bed and breakfast and living on a remote island, this job is for you.

An East Bay island home to a small inn and lighthouse built in 1874 is hiring two innkeepers.

Innkeepers are responsible for all operations on the island, including providing ferry service to guests, serving breakfast and dinner, and managing housekeeping services at the inn.

East Brother Island is located in San Francisco Bay, approximately 1,000 feet off the coast of Richmond.

The inn hires two innkeepers who work together and live in close quarters.

Current innkeepers Dre and Charity Elmore have been running the inn for two years.

“The lighthouse keepers are a ‘couple’ who, as employees of the organization, manage and direct the bed and breakfast inn and day programs on East Brother Island,” the job description states.

Applicants must have a U.S. Coast Guard Commercial Vessel NMC Operator’s License for a boat carrying at least six guests.

The new innkeepers would therefore start in April 2025.

The two innkeepers earned a combined $140,000 a year and received health benefits and “modest” accommodations on the island.

“There is modest accommodation on the island, but some keepers have in the past chosen to live off island on days off. We prefer the keepers to live on the island full-time,” the listing reads.

The East Brother Island Light Station was built on the one-acre island in 1874.

The island was operated by the US Lighthouse Service until 1939, when the agency merged with the Coast Guard.

In 1979, the nonprofit East Brother Light Station Inc. was formed to restore the island for public use.

To apply for the innkeeper positions, applicants are asked to apply together on the East Brother Light Station website.
