In an unparalleled holiday tradition, the Salvation Army Cauldron at AT&T Stadium is in use during Dallas Cowboys games.

But it was a Cowboys opponent that struck first on Monday night.

Cincinnati Bengals running back Chase Brown caught a pass from Joe Burrow during Monday’s game against the Cowboys and then rappelled down the left sideline for a 19-yard touchdown. He celebrated by making a beeline for the Salvation Army cauldron that sat behind the end zone.

The officials showered his celebration and called him out of bounds before he reached the end zone. Brown was upset to have his score and celebration wiped out.

But Brown didn’t go out of bounds. The Bengals disputed the on-field call and replay reversed the on-field call. Brown’s touchdown was good. But he’ll never regain the full joy of his celebration of making fun of a long-standing Cowboys tradition.

The cauldron jump goes back several seasons, to the heyday of Ezekiel Elliott’s first stint with the Cowboys. Elliott repeatedly jumped into the bowl after points, a routine that resulted in several fines from the NFL, which Elliott was happy to pay.

The Cauldron has become a target for the Cowboys’ opponents, who have come up with their own creative touchdown celebrations to play off Elliott’s. Unfortunately for Brown, his celebration was cut short by a poor decision.

The good news for Brown is that his touchdown gave the Bengals a 14-10 lead. Now he’s waiting to see if the NFL imposes a fine or decides to drop that penalty.
