Bengals' Zac Taylor and Jordan Battle fumble in win over Titans

One play will likely stay in the minds of Jordan Battle and Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor for a while.

At the end of the third quarter of the Bengals’ 37-27 win over the Tennessee Titans in Week 15, Battle turned what should have been the highlight of his career into a play that will show every NFL team in the league not to do .

When defensive tackle McKinnley Jackson forced a fumble from Titans running back Tony Pollard, Battle was there to recover the ball. He took off and it looked like an easy touchdown for the second-year safety.

But just before he crossed the goal line, Battle tried to pass the ball to his outside hand and fumbled the ball out of his hands. No touchdown. It was a mistake that cannot and should not happen in a football game. Instead of taking a 37-14 lead, Tennessee got the ball back, but the Pollard fumble ended up costing them nothing.

“We deal with it weekly,” Taylor said of the piece. “We show these clips, something like that can never happen to us.” It’s in our control. And you go two meters over the goal line, letters and logos, it’s easy and then you can do whatever you want. We often preach that it will happen to people who aren’t used to carrying the ball and being in those situations, like Ja’Marr (Chase) or Tee (Higgins). This is a situation we cannot have.”

Following the game, Battle explained what happened during the game.

“For some reason I tried to put the ball in my left hand as I was going into the end zone and it slipped out of my gloves,” Battle said.

Battle insists it wasn’t because he tried to celebrate too early, but just a mistake on his part when he tried to pass the ball at the wrong time.

Regardless, it’s a play that can’t happen. The Bengals were fortunate to have a lead over the Titans at this point and ended up winning the game. However, if the game had been closer, there could have been a game-changing play as it would have cost his team points.

Pro Bowl wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase addressed the game with his teammate in a way that matched Chase’s personality.
