It’s been 15 years since BYU was last in a conference race this late in the season, but the Cougars remain in contention after two straight losses in the Big 12.

However, with BYU out of control of its own destiny, the Cougars’ Big 12 title hopes were dashed before their game against Houston concluded Saturday night.

Heading into the final weekend of the regular season, nine teams were vying for a spot in the Big 12 Championship, according to the league.

The Deseret News will be updating tiebreaker scenarios throughout Saturday as results come in showing who is eliminated, who is still in the race and who earns a spot in on Dec. 7 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas secured the Big 12 Championship.

Iowa State secures its spot in the Big 12 Championship

Iowa State secured the second and final spot in the Big 12 Championship Game with BYU’s 30-18 victory over Houston late Saturday night.

The Cyclones will face Arizona State, which secured its spot in the Big 12 title game earlier in the day.

BYU was eliminated from the Big 12 championship race

BYU is eliminated from the Big 12 championship race due to Iowa State’s 29-21 win over Kansas State.

If BYU beats Houston, Iowa State will face Arizona State in the Big 12 championship game.

If BYU loses to Houston, Colorado will face Arizona State in the Big 12 championship game.

Arizona State secures its spot in the Big 12 Championship

Arizona State became the first team to secure its spot in the Big 12 Championship with its win over Arizona on Saturday and TCU’s win over Cincinnati.

The Sun Devils, the highest-ranked Big 12 team in the College Football Playoff rankings at No. 16, finished the year with a record of 7-2 in the Big 12 and 10-2 overall.

  • BYU – 7-2 – Defeated Houston 30-18

  • Baylor – 6-3 – Defeated Kansas, 45-17

  • TCU – 6-3 – Beat Cincinnati 20-13

  • Texas Tech – 6-3 – Beat West Virginia 52-15

  • West Virginia – 5-4 – Lost to Texas Tech, 52-15

Note: Kansas, Cincinnati, Houston, Arizona, Utah, UCF and Oklahoma State were eliminated before this weekend.

How Colorado was eliminated: The Buffaloes fell to BYU and gave Iowa State the final berth in the Big 12 Championship after Arizona State, BYU, Colorado and Iowa State all tied 7-2 in league play.

How BYU was eliminated: The Cougars were eliminated when Iowa State won because they would not win tiebreaker scenarios involving both Arizona State and Iowa State.

How Baylor was eliminated: The Bears were eliminated when Arizona State won, ensuring two teams had a better Big 12 record than Baylor.

How Kansas State was eliminated: The Wildcats were eliminated after Baylor defeated Kansas and Texas Tech defeated West Virginia on Saturday morning.

How TCU, Texas Tech and West Virginia were eliminated: Colorado’s 52-0 victory over Oklahoma State on Friday eliminated all three teams from contention for the Big 12 Championship.
