Big 12 title scenarios, tiebreakers, rooting guide for ASU football

Want to watch the Arizona State football team in the Big 12 Championship game?

As time ran out for the Sun Devils’ win over the Arizona Wildcats, only one catastrophic scenario remained.

ASU football, which defeated Arizona 49-7 in the Territorial Cup, tied for first place in the Big 12 along with Colorado, BYU and Iowa State, which advanced to this weekend’s regular-season finale, with each team having a conference record of 6th :2 could show.

Sun Devils coach Kenny Dillingham’s team, looking to reach the conference finals at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Dec. 7, took care of business in Tucson.

Only a win by Cincinnati over TCU (with kickoff at 4:00 p.m. MST) coupled with a loss by BYU in its game on Saturday at 8:15 p.m. MST would keep ASU out of the conference championship game.

TCU at Cincinnati, 4 p.m., Saturday, ESPN+

Root for TCU before Cincinnati. Should BYU lose after Texas Tech beats West Virginia and Baylor beats Kansas, a three-team tiebreaker between Iowa State, ASU and Colorado would lead to ASU facing Colorado in the title game should TCU beat Cincinnati. If Cincinnati beat TCU and BYU lost, it would be Colorado vs. Iowa State in the Big 12 Finals.

Kansas State at Iowa State, 5:30 p.m., Saturday, FOX

Root for Kansas State to upset Iowa State. An Iowa State loss and a BYU win would put ASU in the Big 12 title game against BYU.

Houston at BYU, 8:15 p.m., Saturday, ESPN

Root for Houston or BYU. If Iowa State loses, ASU would already be in the title game. The Sun Devils would also reach the conference finals should TCU beat Cincinnati. But if the Cyclones win and Cincinnati beats TCU, Sun Devils fans would have to be rooting for BYU since only a BYU win would get ASU to the Big 12 Championship Game. A BYU loss in this scenario would send Colorado and Iowa State into the conference title game.

Big 12 scenarios begin in the final week of the regular season

Here are the tiebreaker scenarios for the Big 12 Championship Game between Arizona State, Colorado, BYU and Iowa State following Colorado’s win over Oklahoma State, Texas Tech’s win over West Virginia, Baylor’s win over Kansas and Arizona State’s win over Arizona.

Scenarios with a draw between two teams:

The two teams tied at 7-2 will be participants in the Big 12 Championship Game.

Scenarios with a draw between three teams:

Iowa State loss: Arizona State vs. BYU
BYU loss:
- If Texas Tech beats West Virginia (Texas Tech won), then
  - If Baylor beats Kansas (Baylor won) and Cincinnati beats TCU: Colorado vs. Iowa State
  - Otherwise: Colorado vs. Arizona State
