Big Blue wins at home, loses No. 1 NFL draft pick

EAST RUTHERFORD – The New York Giants laughed in the face of NFL history on Sunday, refusing to further cement themselves as a laughingstock with their first home win of the season.

The Giants secured the number 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft – with one week to go – and will now be concerned for the foreseeable future with the question of whether their 42:33 victory over the Indianapolis Colts at MetLife Stadium was successful it’s worth it.

Drew Lock threw four touchdown passes and ran for a fifth, while Malik Nabers topped 100 catches and 1,000 receiving yards in his rookie season as the Giants snapped their franchise-worst 10-game losing streak.

Brian Daboll still faces an uncertain future as he has been forced to answer questions about his job security as head coach of the New York Giants since Week 2. The Giants (3-13) were in danger of becoming the first team to finish 0-9 at home in NFL history. Additionally, they have been double-digit losers in nine of the last 11 years and this has become a reality and on game day the product has been nowhere near what it should be.

And when thinking about the Giants’ future broadly, there’s reason to question why they would want anything to change record-wise, considering they entered the day at the top of the 2025 NFL Draft and would finish with the No. 1 pick next April if they did so they wouldn’t win another game.

Nabers finished the game with seven catches for 171 yards and two touchdowns. Lock completed 17 of 23 for 309 yards and those four scores. The Colts (7-9) made the playoffs still alive, but the Giants looked very much like a team that was still in the running.

With the Raiders also winning on Sunday, the Giants are now third in the draft order and could slide to No. 4 if the Dolphins beat the Browns in Cleveland in the 4 o’clock window.

And we go back and forth. Joe Flacco has thrown another touchdown pass, his second of the game, this time to Michael Pittman, and the Colts aren’t going away.

Malik Nabers is good. He brought just his sixth catch of the game home, 59 yards, restoring the Giants’ lead to two scores.

The Colts. Good Lord. What play call was that? Flacco to Alec Pierce pulls Indy to within two points. But their 2-point conversion fails. Flacco threw to Michael Pittman, a pseudo hook and ladder to Jonathan Taylor, who dropped the pitch.

Giants 28, Colts 20: Late 3rd quarter

Brian Daboll showed some confidence in his offense and the Giants failed to deliver. Tyrone Tracy took a pitch left on fourth-and-1 from his own 42 and was stopped for no gain late in the third quarter.

The Colts took over after losses and now enter the fourth quarter trailing by 8. The crazy thing is that the Giants have the No. 1 seed on the line — Indianapolis is still in the playoff hunt.

The Giants’ defense stepped up again when the Colts went up on fourth-and-1 and missed a chance for a field goal with 4:32 left in the third quarter. Elijah Chatman was credited with stopping a leaping Jonathan Taylor for no gain and turning the Colts over on downs.

And the Giants are behind by double digits. Must have been a halftime speech.

Ihmir Smith-Marsette returned the second-half kickoff 100 yards, his first touchdown return of the season. He essentially sprinted in a straight line without being touched by an Indianapolis player.

The piece lasted 12 seconds and shortly after, easily audible shouts of “Let’s go Giants!” broke out. With a win, the Giants would fall out of the No. 1 spot in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Halftime: Giants 21, Colts 13

The Giants are playing like a team that doesn’t want to make history on Sunday. Jonathan Taylor’s touchdown run brought the Colts closer, but the Giants got three touchdown passes from Drew Lock (7-for-8, 153 yards, 3 touchdowns). Malik Nabers has four catches for 103 yards.

If the Giants win, they will be the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Should be an interesting second half.

Malik Nabers made perhaps his best catch of the season, a diving grab at the goal line that set up Drew Lock’s shot for Wan’Dale Robinson. Nabers has 101 catches this season, while Big Blue adds one more before halftime.

For only the second time since 2020, the Giants quarterback has thrown three touchdowns. Tommy DeVito was the other last season.

Giants 14, Colts 6, 9:26 in second quarter

A pass interference penalty on Tae Banks gave the Colts a golden opportunity to get into the end zone. But more pressure from Brian Burns up front forced Indianapolis to settle for another Matt Gay field goal. Giants DL Armon Watts just returned from IR and is unfortunately down with an injury. Didn’t look good. Tried to put weight on his leg but couldn’t and fell onto the grass. The shopping cart is outside.

Giants 14, Colts 3, 11:32 left in 2nd quarter

Where has this Giants offense been all season? Well, they didn’t play the Colts.

Drew Lock’s second touchdown pass of the game, this time to Darius Slayton, gave the Giants a 14-3 lead. Slayton caught the ball on a crosser, broke a tackle and ran into the end zone for the 32-yard score. Suddenly the Giants are in danger of winning or losing the top pick in the 2025 NFL Draft – of course, it’s still early.

Nabers caught a wide receiver screen on third-and-14, bringing in his 98th catch of the season. This gives him exactly 1,000 yards receiving and 1,002 yards receiving, making him the first pair of teammates alongside Tyrone Tracy to achieve this feat since Reggie Bush and Marques Colston in 2006.

Rakeem Nunez-Roches and the Giants’ defensive front held firm, forcing the Colts to settle for a 32-yard field goal from Matt Gay. Nunez-Roches broke the line on third down and caught Joe Flacco from behind for a sack. The Giants have put pressure on Flacco so far – Kayvon Thibodeaux tackled Flacco on the throw that led to Dane Belton’s INT on the first drive. Brian Burns has been in the backfield throughout.

Why: Jonathan Taylor finished the game with 218 rushing yards on 29 carries, for a 7.5 average, a long of 70 and three scores. The Giants had Alvin Kamara and Derrick Henry at bay, but Atlanta’s Bijan Robinson came through with two touchdown runs and 94 yards on 22 carries. This will be a difficult task. The Giants currently hold the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft and with a franchise quarterback potentially in play, any win will prove costly from that perspective. On the other hand, they would like to avoid becoming the first team in NFL history to lose all nine home games since the league added 17 games^Th Game on schedule. The last time the Giants went winless at home was in 1974, when they played in the Yale Bowl in Connecticut and finished 0-7. The Colts are still in the hunt for an AFC playoff spot but need a lot of help. You can bet there will be plenty of spectators from the Indy sidelines as this result turns in their favor early.
