Borussia Dortmund loses to Barcelona in an exciting CL duel

Borussia Dortmund suffered a narrow 2-3 defeat against FC Barcelona in a turbulent game in the UEFA Champions League.

In a hard-fought game in which there was little difference between the two teams, FC Barcelona prevailed and took three points against Borussia Dortmund. Serhou Guirassy scored twice for the black and yellow, but a goal from Raphinha and a brace from Ferran Torres handed the Spanish giants BVB their first home defeat of the season.

Nuri Sahin caused some big surprises with his starting eleven, particularly the nomination of Gio Reyna and Julien Duranville to the team in the absence of Julian Brandt and Maximilian Beier. Emre Can also returned to the starting line-up to replace the injured Niklas Süle.

Barcelona looked lively in the early stages and had a few chances to score. Lamine Yamal looked dangerous and created the first real chance of the game. But Raphinha shot his shot wide of the goal. On the other side, Duranville brilliantly managed to set up Sabitzer, who missed the goal from eight meters away.

Gregor Kobel was forced into action in the 36th minute but was able to save Jules Kounde. Despite a lively first half, neither team managed to make a breakthrough before the break.

Borussia Dortmund thought they had taken the lead in the 50th minute when Serhou Guirassy had the ball in the net after a beautiful cross from Jamie Gittens. However, the goal was ruled out for offside.

Two minutes later, Raphinha scored for Barcelona after fending off Dani Olmo’s through ball and avoiding the offside trap. The goal stood despite Borussia Dortmund players complaining about a foul in the build-up to the game.

In the 58th minute, BVB were awarded a penalty after Guirassy was brought down by Pau Cubarsí in the penalty area. The striker stepped up and made no mistake to bring the home team back on level terms.

Ferran Torres then restored Barcelona’s lead after another excellent play down Barcelona’s right cross. The winger converted the rebound into the goal after the first attempt was parried by Fermín López.

A few moments later, Guirassy had the unique chance to equalize again for Borussia Dortmund. But after a fantastic run from Jamie Gittens, he fired a free header over the crossbar from six meters out.

Two minutes later, the outstanding striker actually scored his second goal of the night, taking advantage of a brilliant move from Pascal Groß and firing into the empty net. Yan Couto was also involved in the setup.

Buoyed by the equalizer, Borussia Dortmund seemed to be the dominant team in the final stages. But in the 85th minute, Torres scored on the counterattack and gave Barcelona the lead for the third time.

That proved to be the winning goal and handed Borussia Dortmund their first home defeat in the Nuri Sahin era. It was a strong performance from BVB in a game from which they can learn a lot.

Despite the defeat, Borussia Dortmund remains on track to qualify for the round of 16 of the Champions League.
