BOSTON (WHDH) – Boston City Councilwoman Tania Fernandes Anderson is under investigation by the federal government, according to 7News sources.

On Tuesday afternoon, Fernandes Anderson was scheduled to attend a meeting at Boston City Hall, but she didn’t show up. She did not answer the door at home or respond to a request for comment.

Another councilor said the situation was worrying.

“Always concerning, especially for elected officials. I’m not at all sure where it comes from. So we definitely have to wait and see what the investigation is about,” said Boston City Councilwoman Erin Murphy.

In November, state regulators sent Fernandes Anderson a letter saying she had violated campaign finance law by filing late and accepting more donations than allowed. Fernandes Anderson resolved these problems and was informed by the state that the Attorney General’s Office could intervene if there were further problems.

“We are expected to have a higher level of expectation when it comes to our behavior and the way we conduct ourselves in the city. So I think it’s very important that we figure out what’s happening and if it’s not something to be concerned about, then be supportive of her, but if it’s something that’s concerning then I definitely would have an opinion,” Murphy said.

Fernandes Anderson was elected to the Boston City Council in 2021. She is the first African immigrant and Muslim American elected to the City Council. She represents Roxbury, Dorchester, Fenway and parts of the South End.

City Council President Ruthzee Louijeune said she was letting the legal process play out.

“…I would like to emphasize that any actions found to undermine the law must be taken very seriously. Council’s work will continue without interruption and we will continue to focus on the issues that matter most to residents, including acting with integrity as a body,” Louijeune said in a statement.

The next city council meeting is scheduled for Wednesday at city hall.
