“Boston ‘had conversations’ with forgotten All-Star”

Remember John Means?

We wouldn’t blame you if you didn’t, but it might be time to get used to the name again.

Means was one of the best pitchers in baseball a few years ago, was named an American League All-Star in 2019 and posted a 3.68 ERA in 73 career starts for the Baltimore Orioles. Means even threw a no-hitter in 2021 that was just one pitch away from a perfect game, but has since suffered one of the steepest setbacks in recent memory, suffering two season-ending injuries in the past three seasons.

However, the Red Sox have experience dealing with frequently injured pitchers, so it’s not surprising that they are interested.

According to MassLive’s Chris Cotillo on Thursday, Boston has had “some conversations” with the 31-year-old.

James Paxton and Liam Hendriks are recent examples of pitchers who arrived at Fenway Park with no intention of pitching in the near future. Neither would the funds, as he underwent a second career Tommy John surgery in June 2024 – so it will be a while before he returns to the mound.

Boston’s success with guys like Paxton and (potentially) Hendriks could be a good boost for the former standout, who could sign a two-year deal and slowly work his way back before returning in 2026. The Red Sox should also retain their status After acquiring Garrett Crochet, options open up, so signing a guy like Means shouldn’t close the door to further additions to the pitching staff.

It’s not the sexiest move, but it’s worth keeping an eye on.
