Boxing Day Test live: Australia chase victory as India look to equal record score on day five at MCG

Live: Australia vs India at MCG

22 overs left – India 6-138 (T: 340)

Pat Cummins again.

Yashasvi Jaiswal jumps into the line of the ball and shoots past Usman Khawaja for a two count.

23 overs left – India 6-138 (T: 340)

Mitchell Starc accelerates and that hurts. The first few balls of each game were torture for the big man with the bad back.

He hides the ball in his off hand as it comes in. Did Cummins perhaps sense a reverse swing in his over?

Nothing yet. There is a little movement off the field, but nothing in a dangerous line yet.

Washington doesn’t see anything off-off, so Starc shoots off-stump. Washington is digging it up.

The last ball is good, it swings into the pads and Washington keeps it out.

Worth remembering: Washington Sundar scored 62 out of 144 in the first innings of the famous Gabba win for India in 2021.

24 overs left – India 6-138 (T: 340)

Pat Cummins is back.

He got off to a good start and Jaiswal tried to fight off the deficit. He’s suddenly a little nervous.

Cummins hits a short ball and Jaiswal in and throws his head to the side.

He rams the last one into the ground and Mitch Marsh cleans up.

Sunil Gavaskar comments on Rishabh Pant’s recent sacking

Maybe tamer and more poetic than “STUPID, STUPID, STUPID!!!”.

“I always felt that six was like a drug. Once you hit a few sixes, no matter what form of game, it’s in you,” he said on ABC Sport.

“That could have been taken for a boundary.”

25 overs left – India 6-138 (T: 340)

From Lyon to Washington again. He’s found his way around the office pretty well.

He knows everything is out there and spinning and he plays accordingly.

Lyon tries to shoot the ball faster, but Washington deflects it to the point.

26 overs left – India 6-132

Scott Boland is back with a silly mid-off for Yashasvi Jaiswal, who is on 76.

Jaiswal defends right in front of him and Konstas shys away from the stumps.

Konstas directs the crowd’s applause from the silly middle of the voice-over. Gotta love it.

But here too, Jaiswal is not worried.

Boland comes from near the wicket and Jaiswal clips him off the hip to score two more.

Four! What a shot. Beautiful off-drive to a long ball. He’s absolutely solid out there.

27 overs left – Lyon have fielders everywhere

Two slips, two silly incidents, one short leg. Washington is in a battle.

And he pushes after it, but doesn’t slip.

Washington defends well outside.

Not much really happens in the over but the fielders are having a great time.

28 overs left – In comes Scott Boland

Yashasvi Jaiswal is at the door with even more pressure on his young shoulders.

RUSH! Jaiswal throws everything at a wide opponent and misses everything. Was it about runs or just scaring the life out of Sam Konstas under the covers?

Konstas is in the firing line. However, he still won’t shut up.

We have our answer to Travis Head’s celebration

(ABC Sports)

It’s a reference to Head’s own joke after winning 4-10 in Galle in 2022.

64th over – Lyon with Washington Sundar as the new man

Another chance! A difficult thing, but Washington bumps into Konsta’s thigh in the middle of the ball and the ball bounces to safety behind him.

Washington pushes hard and needs two to cover.

LYON WILL BE NITISH AND INDIA IS SIX DOWN!

Nathan Lyon gets a ball that slides straight on and finds the outside edge, and Steve Smith makes a great catch deep left behind Alex Carey.

Lyon loved this. The Aussies are on the rise now.

29 overs left – Lyon again

Nitish Kumar Reddy is on strike.

63rd over – A huge roar greets Nitish Kumar Reddy to the goal crease

The century maker of the first innings is out in the middle to face Boland.

A little leading edge as Nitish tries to cut off his thigh. This would have gone straight into a silly cutscene, but there’s no one in there. Still not a very offensive field.

In reply, Cummins puts someone in the ring and Nitish manages to turn a single off his hip behind the square.

Jaiswal carves a couple in the depths. He still cuts from close to the stump.

JADEJA IS GONE!! Boland does it again!

Scott Boland struck in his first over and India were five wickets behind.

Today isn’t the first time Boland has been given a ball to jump on a batsman and Jadeja can’t help but deflect it, allowing Alex Carey to get a healthy nod through.

30 overs left – Scott Boland replaces Travis Head

Save Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc for the new ball? But there are still 18 overs left. I think it’s worth some effort from the strike men against the new hitter.

31 overs left – Lyon bowling with fielders around the bat

Ravindra Jadeja has Sam Konstas and Marnus Labuschagne chattering under the eyelids on either side of the pitch.

Lyon are challenging both sides at the moment but Jaiswal is doing well to smother the ball.

He’s doing well on defense.

And that’s a virgin.

Do you have any idea what this celebration was about?

I’m not sure what Travis Head did after Rishabh Pant’s wicket.(Getty)

32 overs left – Head comes over the wicket

Jaiswal hits the offside and Head takes a look at Jadeja.

Jadeja pushes towards middle and hits a single on Marnus’ arm.

Konstas is silly in the middle.

Four singles, including one on the last ball of the over. So Jadeja sticks to the strike.

33 overs left – Nathan Lyon continues

Ravindra Jadeja is out there but Lyon is still bowling to Jaiswal who goes forward to defend.

“Did he pick it?” shouts Konstas foolishly mid-game as Jaiswal plays back to defend a skidder.

Jaiswal hits a single to cover, giving Lyon a ball to Jadeja.
