Branchburg company receives citation for spill that impacted New Jersey water

BRANCHBURG – The state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has cited the municipal company whose chemical leak caused taste and odor changes in drinking water at New Jersey American Water’s Raritan Division.

On Monday, the DEP filed a citation against M&U International, headquartered in Shanghai, China, on Readington Road, for improper discharge, a violation of the Water Pollution Control Act.

According to DEP, the Somerset County Office of Emergency Management responded to the site in response to odor complaints from a resident and conducted an initial cleanup of a spill at M&U International on the night of December 16th.

M&U International, located at the corner of Readington Road and Columbia Road, is a facility that repackages fragrances, essential oils and flavors.
