Brazilian clubs find out their opponents for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup

Six teams will represent the entire South American continent at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, four of which are teams from Brazil’s Série A; Flamengo, Fluminense, Palmeiras and Botafogo. The draw for the group stage of the tournament next June has just been announced and there are some exciting duels waiting for us.

The four clubs from Brasileirão are the last four winners of the Copa Libertadores. It was only on Saturday that Botafogo were crowned champions of the continent and last year Fluminense won their first ever Libertadores title. In the previous four years, Flamengo and Palmeiras dominated South American football, winning two titles each. Now everyone has something big to prove on the global stage.

Botafogo

Botafogo was drawn in Group B against Paris St. Germain, Atlético de Madrid and Seattle Sounders FC.

“Fogo” finds itself in something of a group of death here, but there’s no doubt it’s a chance these players will be looking forward to. The opportunity to test their skills against two elite European clubs will be a good indicator of where the South American team ranks among the best in the world.

Botafogo is currently the most in-form team in all of South America and is on the verge of winning a historic league and Copa Libertadores double before facing Pachuca of Mexico in the semi-finals of the 2024 Club World Cup, where Real Madrid are rivals , if they can reach the final. Botafogo has a team capable of competing with the best.

Fluminense

Fluminense was drawn in Group F with Borussia Dortmund, Ulsan HD of South Korea and Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa. Fluminense could have feared a worse draw, but they have their own problems to solve before this tournament.

Despite a difficult season for Fluminense, their ticket to the USA in 2025 was booked a year ago. The fortunes of the Rio de Janeiro team must change in order not to embarrass themselves in this tournament, as the team has been far from the 2023 level this season. Expect reinforcements for “Flu” ahead of the summer competition.

Flamengo

Flamengo were drawn in Group D against Chelsea FC, Club León and Espérance Sportive de Tunisie.

If you stroll down any street in Rio de Janeiro you will see the red and black stripes of Flamengo. The eye test alone shows that this is the most supported team in Rio and perhaps all of Brazil. Flamengo has one of the most complete squads in South America and will be able to compete against European teams in the USA next summer.

Palmeiras

Palmeiras was drawn in Group A with FC Porto, Al Ahly and Inter Miami CF.

A strong group includes the African champions as well as FC Porto, a team known for selecting the best South American talent and bringing them to Europe. However, Palmeiras can certainly compete to get out of this group.

It looks like Palmeiras will narrowly miss out on the Brazilian league title this season, which of course would have been an incredible third title in a row. Nonetheless, a second place finish in such an incredible league shows the level at which this team operates. The only team from São Paulo (and not Rio) to have qualified from all of South America, they have plenty of talent in their ranks and have won major trophies in recent times.
