Brewers Reportedly Trade Devin Williams to Yankees (UPDATE)

Brewers Reportedly Trade Devin Williams to Yankees (UPDATE)

The New York Yankees are making a significant trade with an NL Central club today, but no, it’s not a Cody Bellinger trade. At least not yet.

It’s closer to the Brewers. Devin Williams, long expected to be traded this offseason, traveled to New York:

I hate that this is the Brewers’ smart move – to lock in that value over the long term and over and over again – but I’ll be glad Devin Williams isn’t gone. Guy was a real elite for a long time. (Except sometimes against the Cubs, I suppose.)

We’ll see what the return is and whether it’s related to other Yankees maneuvers in the short term. Sometimes multiple things come to a head around the same constellation of tradeable parts of a small handful of organizations.

Plus, the Yankees apparently aren’t going to let Luke Weaver open up any further, so they should just send him to the Cubs for free.

More soon.

UPDATE: Here is the trade return for the Brewers:

Cortes has obviously been a solid starter for the Yankees for some time, and like Williams, he has another year left. So that’s the trade, and the Brewers acquire Durbin for the theoretical downgrade. The 24-year-old Durbin is a likely big league-ready utility man who pitched well at Triple-A last year.
