Brighton were booed after a goalless draw against Brentford

Brighton were booed after their winning streak was extended to six Premier League games with a frustrating goalless draw against away club Brentford.

Albion dominated for much of a foggy evening at the Amex Stadium, hitting the woodwork within four minutes through Julio Enciso.

Bees goalkeeper Mark Flekken also made a number of important saves before being forced off injured in the 36th minute, although his replacement Hakon Valdimarsson was rarely tested on his Premier League debut.

Brentford, who remain without an away win in the top flight this season, had an early goal from Yoane Wissa ruled out for offside following VAR intervention but were little threatened despite a better second-half performance.

The Seagulls remain in 10th place ahead of Monday’s game against Aston Villa, with Thomas Frank’s visitors one position and two points behind heading into a New Year’s Day showdown with Arsenal.

Brighton have fallen from second place to mid-table due to their poor form, which has drawn the attention of head coach Fabian Hurzeler.

Seagulls chief executive Paul Barber urged fans to take stock in his program notes after revealing he was releasing emails “full of doom and gloom” following the recent 3-1 home defeat to rivals Crystal Palace had.

Enciso, one of two players Hurzeler recalled after Saturday’s 1-1 draw at West Ham, almost gave Albion a dream start.

A poor pass from Bees goalkeeper Flekken was intercepted by Carlos Baleba and after a neat shot from Joao Pedro, Paraguay striker Enciso curled against the right post.

Brentford came to Sussex with the worst away record in the division, having previously taken a single point from 24 available this season.

Flekken saved well from Baleba and then conceded a weak header from the unmarked Enciso before the away side thought they had taken the lead in the 13th minute.

After coming on at the end of a quick counterattack by Mads Roerslev, Wissa hit high into the net past Seagulls keeper Bart Verbruggen, but was narrowly ruled offside.

Flekken made further saves from Brajan Gruda and Matt O’Riley before being injured when he parried away a deflected cross from Kaoru Mitoma and was replaced by 23-year-old Iceland international Valdimarsson.

Brentford remained on the defensive and, apart from Wissa’s disallowed try, offered little forward action in a one-sided opening period that ended somehow level.

Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke made a crucial save from Wissa as the west London club started the second half brightly before Christian Norgaard’s ambitious shot went wide to groans from the increasingly restless home fans.

Hurzeler responded with a triple substitution, bringing on Yasin Ayari, Simon Adingra and Yankuba Minteh in place of O’Riley, Gruda and Mitoma.

Albion striker Pedro then escaped a penalty in the 76th minute after swinging an arm at Bees substitute Yehor Yarmoliuk without touching him, before defender Ben Mee became the second visiting player to go off injured.

The substitution of Solly March in the 88th minute in his first appearance since his serious knee injury in October last year briefly brightened the mood in the stands.

But after a hectic five minutes of injury time, some Seagulls fans vented their displeasure in the final break as their club continues to wait for victory.
