Bron Breakker retains Intercontinental title

Bron Breakker stole the show at WWE Survivor Series 2024 – and left Vancouver still as Intercontinental Champion.

In a fantastic triple threat match between Breakker, Ludwig Kaiser and Sheamus, Breakker broke fans’ hearts as he defended his championship by pinning Sheamus, preventing “The Celtic Warrior” from winning the only title he had in had eluded him his entire career. For Sheamus, it was another failed attempt to win the coveted Intercontinental Title.

For Breakker, it was another win in a long list of great victories when all is said and done.

Finally, WWE is moving full steam ahead with a massive push for Breakker, the two-time Intercontinental Champion and one of the best young talents in all of professional wrestling. ESPN recently ranked Breakker at No. 11 in the overall wrestlers under 30 rankings – a ranking many consider too low for the second-generation star – but it’s clear WWE sees him as a future No. 1 contender.

Earlier this year, just months after being promoted to the main roster by NXT, Breakker was reportedly such a success on the main roster that WWE adjusted their plan for the former NXT Champion. WWE is accelerating its push and plans to make him the focus of Raw during the red brand’s upcoming move to Netflix.

In fact, Breakker has all the tools to become one The face of WWE’s flagship show, and similar to Gunther, a longer Intercontinental Championship reign could be the vehicle that gets him there. Breakker’s successful title defense at Survivor Series WarGames – a stark contrast to LA Knight’s shocking defeat – is one of the first steps WWE is taking to remove some of the stink from his surprise Intercontinental Title loss to Jey Uso earlier this year.

However, this appeared to be just a brief incident for Breakker and once again WWE is moving forward with big plans for the star.

WWE has reportedly decided to promote Breakker not just as a prototypical monster heel or beloved babyface, but rather as a “tweener,” which is essentially WWE’s way of utilizing the multi-dimensional star, depending on how the company is using it at the time considers correct. This role can be difficult to play if the wrong star is playing it, but Breakker is the perfect candidate for this role. This was quite evident at Survivor Series, where Breakker’s fans barked loudly and responded well to his match, which helped save Survivor Series after the first two matches had discouraged the crowd.

Given his intensity and focus, Breakker seems more like a heel, but his crowd chants, incredible athleticism and impressive number of games in his short career have already made him a pseudo-favorite of fans. While WWE could have accelerated Breakker’s push and catapulted him straight to the top of the card, that’s not necessary at the moment.

The WWE roster is absolutely full, so there’s no reason to highlight him too quickly on a Raw show that also features the likes of CM Punk, Seth Rollins, Gunther and Drew McIntyre. The best strategy with Breakker is to continue to sign him heavily and only push him into bigger rivalries when he’s ready – and only when the crowd is clamoring for it.

Based on how fans treated him at WWE Survivor Series, that may happen sooner than expected and Breakker could find himself facing off against stars like Punk or Gunther in the coming months. What’s more likely is that Breakker will be a strong Intercontinental Champion, holding that prestigious title just like Gunther.

This is a good role for him at the moment – and until the time comes for him to take the plunge.
