Bronco Mendenhall, an Alpine, Utah native with 18 years of head coaching experience, has been named Utah State University’s 31st head coach.

Mendenhall returns to his home state after spending the past year as head coach at the University of New Mexico. He signed a six-year contract with the Aggies.

The 2006 Mountain West Coach of the Year began his coaching career at Brigham Young University in 2005, where he led the Cougars to a bowl game in each of his 11 seasons as head coach.

In 2015, Mendenhall left Provo to become the head coach at the University of Virginia, where he spent six years. During his tenure, he turned around a struggling program, leading them to three consecutive bowl games and an Atlantic Coast Conference championship in 2019.

After a two-year coaching hiatus, Mendenhall made a comeback in the 2024 season at New Mexico, where he helped the team rank fourth in FBS total yards with an average of 484.2 yards per game.

A graduate of American Fork High School, Mendenhall played at Snow College, earning All-American honors and serving as team captain during the 1985 NJCAA National Championship season. He then played at Oregon State, where he was named team captain his senior year and later served as a graduate assistant. He later served as an assistant coach at Snow College in Northern Arizona, Louisiana Tech in New Mexico and BYU.
