Broncos HC Sean Payton explains why Pat Surtain II didn’t shadow Jerry Jeudy in MNF

After spending most of Monday evening watching Cleveland Browns Receiver Jerry Jeudy may be heading off into the distance Denver Broncos Head coach Sean Payton should reach for a quote from Ferris Bueller.

“Life moves pretty fast…”

Jeudy’s record-breaking night in a Browns uniform, Payton was a cause for concern and likely caused some stomach problems for Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph and overwhelmed cornerback Levi Wallace. The strange thing is that the Broncos had the NFL’s best shutdown cornerback on the field – Patrick Surtain II – who barely completed the Jeudy assignment, but then shut him down when he did.

After the game, Payton explained the reasons behind the kid gloves strategy the Broncos incorrectly used when trying to defend Jeudy.

“We wanted to keep up with Pat and then get him to the other side with an easy slot. We have to deal with that,” Payton said after the game. “I’m sure we’ll watch the tape. We always ask the players. When we come back, how would we, like the coaches, play this game if we played it again? I think that’s coaching. It. “Are we always making sure we’re putting our guys in the best position? Here too we made enough moves.

Going forward, we hope Denver has learned a valuable lesson. With a superior counterattack weapon like PS2, it must be used to maximum effect.

Considering how blatantly Jeudy expressed his intentions: “whip“His former team Joseph’s failure to fight fire with fire with Surtain has to be one of the most glaring mistakes in his otherwise great coaching achievements in 2024. In fact, as the dust settled on the Broncos’ eighth win of the season, it left them in command of the No. 7 seed in the AFC’s playoff race. Surtain even sounded a little confused about them having to go back to the drawing board as a unit. Ultimately, he gave up just two catches for 20 yards to Jeudy.

“He definitely had a game,” Surtain said graciously of Jeudy. “There’s really not much you can say about it. You just have to watch the film and correct it.”

It wasn’t until Joseph finally countered with an opportunistic response with some of his other defensive assets that slot corner Ja’Quan McMillian seriously saved his coach. During the Broncos’ epic back-and-forth victory, it always felt like Denver’s defense would eventually get a chance to finally extinguish the threat if Browns quarterback Jameis Winston continued to take significant risks.

“I kept telling the guys, ‘I’m going to do a gig'” McMillian said after the game. “I just felt the whole game. When you see your teammate make another play, you want to make a play too.”

How much the Broncos missed their game-winning starting cornerback Riley Moss became brutally clear, especially when the Browns saw Wallace line up on an island opposite the dynamic and motivated Jeudy. All in all, now is not the time for anyone to lose faith in the Broncos’ defensive penchant for pulling irons out of the fire. Yes, the Broncos bowed significantly, but ultimately they avoided breaking by inches.

“I saw three turnovers in important parts of the game,” quarterback Bo Nix said. “Not only is it difficult to score turnovers, but it is even more difficult to return them for touchdowns. The fact that they did it twice was crazy. It was kind of nice. I sat over there. The bank has the heaters above it.” I don’t even have to move there. So it’s pretty nice for the offense if they save us like that.

Escaping the second part of a trap game doubleheader certainly wasn’t easy by any means, but on this particular night the Broncos inflicted a whole heap of wounds on themselves. Ultimately, the long-overdue bye week comes at the most opportune time for Coach Payton.

Denver’s Week 14 bye is the final point in the campaign where a team can get their important rest and recovery period.

“It was a different game,” Payton said. “We have to learn from it. It’s good to get the win, which is important because we’re at the stage of the season in December where everything counts. We succeeded. We will rest during the bye and get ready for a team from Indianapolis (Colts).
