AND WE START AT TEN WITH BREAKING NEWS. A section of building collapses in the central business district, closing a section of O’KEEFE AVENUE, just blocks from POYDRAS. We’re told police and firefighters responded to this building in the 600 block of O’Keefe. This is between Gerrard Street and Lafayette Street. The building was reportedly evacuated and the NYPD closed O’KEEFE to ensure the safety of pedestrians and motorists. WDSU REPORTER SHAWANDA JONES IS LIVE WITH US AND SHAWANDA, WHAT CAN YOU TELL US? Well, MORGAN, as you said, I’m here at 611 O’KEEFE AVENUE, where a building shows serious signs of structural damage. I’ll get out of the way so my photojournalist can show you a better look. THE SIDE PANEL BRICKS ARE NOW ON THE GROUND. YOU CAN EVEN SEE THE FOUNDATION BUCKLING NOW. Rescue workers were evacuated and residents had to flee the surrounding buildings earlier this evening. YOU HAVE THE CITIZEN THEATER IN THE BACKGROUND. THEY HAVE SEVERAL SHOPS IN THE AREA AND A VERY, VERY LARGE APARTMENT COMPLEX RIGHT ON THE STREET. EVERYONE WAS evacuated. AND O’KEEFE AVENUE IS CLOSED BETWEEN GERRARD AND POYDRAS STREET. Police and firefighters are working to secure the area while a city inspector assesses the stability of the building. Here’s what the New Orleans fire captain had to say. IT LOOKS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS HERE. That’s one of the reasons we stopped traffic. We are not sure how badly this building is compromised. A portion of O’Keefe Avenue in the city’s central business district was closed to traffic Saturday evening. New Orleans Fire Department officials confirmed to WDSU that a building in the 600 block of O’Keefe Avenue, between Girod Street and Lafayette Street, is at risk of partial collapse. At the moment it is unclear what may have caused the collapse, but officials say they have evacuated several buildings in the immediate area. This part of the business district sees heavy vehicular and pedestrian traffic. People are asked to avoid the area until further notice.
