BVB lost victory against Bayern Munich shortly before the end

BVB vs. FC Bayern Munich: Vincent Kompany surprised with Mathys Tel in the starting line-up

The words enough were exchanged. Uli Hoeneß’s title promise, Hans-Joachim Watzke’s replica, pithy announcements (“We will win”) from the Dortmund camp: with kick-off at 6.30 p.m., everything became worthless in the first duel between the young coaches Nuri Sahin and Vincent Kompany in front of 81,365 spectators.

Kompany had come up with a surprise for the big game. Mathys Tel played in Bayern’s starting eleven for the first time this season, replacing Kingsley Coman on the left wing. Serge Gnabry was missing due to knee problems. At BVB, again in the recently promising 4-3-3, Julian Brandt (thigh injury) was, as expected, not fit, and Serhou Guirassy started up front.

Bayern started stronger with heavy use of pyrotechnics from their fans. They pushed BVB on the defensive for ten minutes, Leroy Sane fired the first long-range shot (8th), and a deflected ball also hit the side netting (11th).

The Dortmund team, at home with the golden record of six wins in six league games, tried to develop Munich’s (inner) defenders immediately after winning the ball in running duels against Maximilian Beier or Gittens – the weapon was speed. Later, such a variation led to the opening goal. Pascal Groß should play the long balls. Every now and then BVB interspersed high pressing to prevent the paralyzing Bayern passing chains.

However, Sahin was forced to make a change early on. Central defender Waldemar Anton suffered an injury to the adductors (right side), which meant that former Bayern player Niklas Süle made his first appearance in five weeks. However, Dortmund’s 1-0 lead came down the left: Gittens let the ball pass after a through pass, he turned around Konrad Laimer on the halfway line – then he sprinted up and away and beat Manuel Neuer.

The stadium boiled over and things continued to be deeply sobering for Bayern. Super striker Kane (14 goals this season) had two supervisors accompany him off the pitch in the 33rd minute, possibly because of a muscle injury. There was initially no diagnosis. From then on, Thomas Müller played at the forefront: the Bayern concept was blown up.

Jamal Musiala, largely invisible until then, released Müller shortly after the break and gave him a huge chance to equalize. The veteran was denied from close range by goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, who parried against the run of the class (48th).

Musiala’s dangerous shot next to the goal and a weak Sane finish from the best position were the last Bayern scenes before Kompany increased the risk with Sacha Boey and Coman. Even after that, Bayern didn’t offer an unbridled rush, but they became more and more powerful. Musiala got the deserved equalizer.
