BYU football players could make history in Alamo Bowl – Deseret News

It’s almost time for the Alamo Bowl.

As BYU prepares to face Colorado on Saturday in one of this month’s most intriguing postseason matchups, several Cougar players are poised to make history.

Here are some numbers to keep an eye on while playing.

Get a comprehensive look at BYU Football’s 1984 National Championship season.

  • With 204 passing yards against the Buffaloes, Jake Retzlaff would be the 16th BYU quarterback to pass for 3,000 yards in a single season, joining Jaren Hall, Zach Wilson and Tanner Mangum as the only such QBs to do so since 2010.
  • Will Ferrin was the definition of “clutch” at kicker for the Cougars. A made field goal on Saturday would be his 22nd of the year, giving him sole possession of first place for a season at BYU.

  • Chase Roberts is 157 yards away from becoming the first Cougar receiver to break the 1,000-yard threshold since Dax Milne in 2020 – although such an achievement is unlikely considering Roberts’ best day for receiving Yards is 131. However, with 16 yards against Colorado, he would pass Jonny Harline and enter the top 20 rankings in program history.
  • The strongest returner Provo has seen in years, Keelan Marion, needs 93 all-purpose yards (combined rushing, receiving and kick return) to reach 1,000 yards for the season. Marion could become BYU’s 10th all-time leading returner with 81 return yards against the Buffaloes.

  • Jack Kelly made a splash in his first season with the Cougars, and with one more sack – his sixth in 2024 – he would have tied for the most by any BYU player in a season since Corbin Kaufusi in 2018.
  • If the Cougars can defeat Shedeur Sanders twice, they would lead the nation in most passes intercepted this season. Jacob Robinson And Tanner wall each have BYU’s best three interceptions, so whoever snags a pick would be the sole team leader for 2024.
  • A win over Colorado would be a sign the Cougars’ 13th 11-win campaign in program history and her sixth in the post-LaVell Edwards era. Additionally, achieving 11 wins would almost certainly result in BYU being ranked in the season-ending AP poll for the 20th time, marking the third time under Kalani Sitake.
