Carson Beck injury update: Status announced for 2nd half of SEC Championship

Carson Beck was ruled out for the second half of the SEC Championship Texas, Georgia trainer Kirby Smart said ABC’s Holly Rowe. Shortly before halftime he apparently suffered an arm injury Shooter Stockton will take over the rest of the way.

“Kirby Smart told me that Carson Beck will not be able to return for this game,” Rowe said after halftime. “They won’t talk about the hand injury at the moment because they don’t know exactly what it is.”

Beck wanted to make one last throw before the break, but was hit. As the Longhorns and Bulldogs battled for the ball behind him, Beck stayed on the ground holding his right arm.

Smart said the staff would evaluate things in the halftime locker room, but expressed optimism that his quarterback could give it a try coming out of halftime. However, Beck can’t return to the game, meaning it’s Stockton’s show.

Stockton is a redshirt sophomore at Georgia and has played in three games this season. However, none of those appearances came against SEC opponents, making it quite a task when UGA faces Texas with the SEC title on the line.

Stockton is a former four-star recruit and was the No. 149 overall player entering the 2022 cycle, according to the On3 industry rankinga weighted average that takes into account all four major recruiting media companies. A tiger (Ga.) Rabun County product, he stayed close to home to play for Georgia – and the fans at Mercedes-Benz Stadium know his heritage quite well.

“Gunner Stockton, you hear those Georgia fans cheering,” Rowe said. “This is a kid who set the high school state record for yards. He is one of the most dynamic kids this state has ever seen. … He’s someone they believe in. They were all cheering him up here on the sidelines and preparing for this big opportunity.”

Stockton was impressive in his first drive after taking over for Beck. He completed three of his four passes for 34 yards – including a highlight reel pass Lawson Luckie – and constructed a scoring drive. Trevor Etienne found the end zone for the game’s first touchdown, giving Georgia a 10-6 lead.
